Shelf-wear along edges has worn paper there, slightly exposing boards. Boards are rubbed, but free of any significant markings. Rear gutter is cracked through; binding feels a bit loose, but covers and signatures remain attached. Title page (with handsome lettering and color frontispiece) is not dated. No copyright page. Containing 26 stories. 152 pages, free of marks with the exception of a few smudges in margins here and there. Beautifully illustrated throughout. Bennett. Frontispiece shows a girl and boy riding the same pony. Numerous other very pretty illustrations printed sepia, some full page. Head and tail of spine and corners slightly rubbed, light rubbing to glaze on edges of covers, prize bookplate on front pastedown dated 1895, occasional very slight fingermarks, one 10 mm (½") closed margin tear. A very good plus copy. Other chromolithograph plates: country dancing; a sweep and milkmaid; the postman; a pedlar showing ribbons to the maidens; 2 nice girls and a sailor; 2 huntsmen in the pink outside The Fox and Grapes with a young serving wench (all portrayed by young children). Soundly bound in original chromolithograph illustrated, glazed paper covered boards with unlettered green cloth backed spine. Color plate Victorian era children's book features 16 full-page chromolithographs, 8 in-text chromolithographs and about 20 in-text sepia toned chromos. Verse text by Mack and designs by Bennett. An exquisite example of late 19th century chromolithography in children's trade books. Trace rubbing to board edges but with a light shelf bump to the lower front corners and mild break to the paper at the lower tips. A few superficial gaps between signatures. Tissue guards presumably removed by original owner to enable easier reading. Handsome copy missing tissue guards but generally VG+.
