In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Included. 1st Edition. Cloth-backed boards. Dustwrapper slightly faded and marked at spine; the spine itself slightly faded at foot (the dustwrapper too small). Inscribed by the author, "To: T. Pierce Hughes Esq., With the Author's Compliments. Alfred Gordon Bennett March '52"; loosely…inserted the press's printed publicity postcard ("Now Ready 7s. 6d. Post 4d."). "The author was himself an officer during the War, and it is primarily from the War that he has derived his inspiration - especially the war in the air. Without exaggeration, we believe that certain of the sonnets in this book may fairly be numbered among the finest produced by both World Wars" (publisher's blurb). Alfred Gordon Bennett was born in Warrington, the son of Arthur Bennett, an alderman accountant who himself had literary leanings (among his published works were The Music of My Heart, 1889, The Dream of an Englishman, 1893, The Dream of a Warringtonian, 1900, and Songs of a Chartered Accountant, 1930). Bennett fils joined the Liverpool Daily Post in 1920, and published a Collected Poems only 10 years later. His first novel was The Valley of Paradise (1922, a South Seas romance billed by the publishers T. Fisher Unwin as "a gripping story of human passions, of love, jealousy, adventure and death"). Others followed, including Thine is the Kingdom (1928, a tale "of the love of two ultra-modern young people", said Duckworth, propounding "a Gospel of Revolt for the young against the prevailing false standards and false ideals") and The Demigods (1939, a fantasy about the world being taken over by giant ants). A founder member of the Institute of Amateur Cinematographers, Bennett was also the author of Cinemania: aspects of filmic creation (1937) and a book of psychical research, Focus on the Unknown (1953). He served in the Second World War in the RAFVR, in intelligence, and spent his latter years in Colwyn Bay. The recipient of Purple Testament, Thomas Pierce Hughes, was a retired bank manager living locally, in Deganwy. The collection's titles feature "Immortality (In memory of G.F. and G.A.S., killed in a flying accident, September 1943)", "L'Homme Qui Rit (Battle of Britain survivor)", "Brief for a Sneak-Raider , In a Gas Gangrene Ward (Pacific)" and "Sonnet (Written in defence of a young lady of doubtful reputation)". From a sonnet, "Q for 'Queenie'": "Over the North Sea: tailplane blown to blazes, / two motors gone U.S., and half her crew / dying or dead, she sank through snow-dark clouds / coughing, choking, then gaining revs. again / but always sinking [. . .] / One thought of his first cricket-bat and ball, / an uncle's birthday gift to him; another / pictured through crimson haze his mother's face / A third remembered a white gorgeous girl / who once had lain locked in his arms at night / . . . and Q for 'Queenie' kept on losing height . . ." D'Arch Smith 62. The list of "Poetry from the Fortune Press" on the rear panel of the dustwrapper is a roll-call of the R.A. Caton pantheon, listing 47 books from authors including Drummond Allison, William Bell, Gavin Ewart, Roy Fuller, Philip Larkin, Nicholas Moore, Vernon Scannell, Francis Scarfe, Julian Symons and Dylan Thomas. Inscribed by Author(s).
