Text is clean and free of marks. Binding tight and solid. This delightful children's tale, deals with a little girl and her dog's adventures and was obviously inspired by the phenomenal success of L. Frank Baum's "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz," which first appeared three years earlier. Fanny Cory would go on by the end of the same year, 1903, would illustrate L. Frank Baum's The Master Key. Two years later she would illustrate The Enchanted Island of Yew, her second and last book collaboration with Baum. The story has a familiar premise: another unflappable little girl and her dog on a quest while exploring yet another fairyland. But Maisie isn't looking for home. She seeks a fortune to compensate for the loss of her father's wood business now that the trains are converting from steam to electricity. They meet a giant with a telephone and travel by rail to visit the Queen in this modern fairyland lit by two suns and natural gas. Maisie, Snip and their fairy friends travel by bicycle and grasshopper to the suns and moon to earn the fortune and help her family. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall.…

Neat contemporary gift inscription from playwright Winchell Smith: "To my friend Richard Jones from Winchell Smith. 1918." Winchell was a highly successful playwright and many of his plays were made into films including two directed by John Ford (*Lightnin'* and *Thank You*), as well as *The Saphead* featuring Buster Keaton (which Smith co-directed). A film of the same name was made from the play in 1922 starring Alice Terry and Rex Ingram. The recipient is likely the noted film director of the same era, F. Richard Jones, best known for his work with Mabel Normand and Stan Laurel.…
