Scarce complete set of the periodical of the youth movement "Deutsche Jungentrucht" founded by Karl Christian Müller (1900-1975), published from 1932 to 1935. The first three issues are published by Gerhard Hüttmann in Potsdam, entitled "ein werk der JUNGENTRUCHT," with two loose leaves inserted, one sheet with text and score and a portrait of a Jungenschaft members. This collection of periodicals is an exemplary set documenting the idea of the German youth movements (Wandervogel, etc.) of the early 20th century and the 1920s as well as the attempts to influence the movement by the Nazis, after taking power in January of 1933. It is surprsing to find this publication of the German youth movement so in tune with contemporary art, opening the fisrt issue with: "dies ist der beginn (This is the Beginning)." Opposite to the title line a modern "h" suggesting a gate. The covers throughout with minimalist, and later esoteric edge in their design. Only the two inlays at the font of volumes one through four of volume one are vaguely reminiscent of the kind of folkloristic design one might expect. The final issue in 1935, following the issue focusing on allegiance, features a horse scull on the cover. The introductory text renders deeply rooted thought attempting to revive the primordial instincts as opposed to the 'mondaine culture, often referred to as civilization. Apathy begins when one says: that's not interesting enough for me to spend time on. One has to be enthusiastic, excited! Why else runs warm blood through our veins? If there is no rage!' (our translation). War games among contending youth parties are described, reports of foreign countries included, books are recommended, e.g. a selection of B. Traven's titles on Mexico. Current contributors include first names or nicknames only: karl, assa, mümmel (art), oskar, erik, hebs, etc. and they are credited at rear, contributions to the magazine are requested, and various publications are recommended on the last two pages. The laid in score and text of the first issue is "das lied von der goldenen horde." All issues are illustrated with striking b/w photographs and reproductions of artwork throughout. The content of the magazines reflect the adventurous spirit of the movement and feature contributions relating to all continents of the world. Though the October issue of 1933 doesn't indicate any significant change in content, it is the first of two issues (Vol. 2, Nos. 2 and 3) with the Swastika on the half-title. An editorial in the latter announces significant changes in design. In the following issue (Vol. 2, No. 4) the typography reverts to the regular upper and lower case and some contributions are typset in the traditional Gothic script. The content shows a more nationalistic oriented and heroic trend with the editorial at the end announcing that the "Jungengruppen" have been assimilated by the Hitler Youth. The programatic note at the end states that after this issue, dedicated to heroic friendship, issues 5 and 6 will feature the themes "Youth in the Destiny of the People," and "Allegiance" in No. 6. The Swastika at the front has been omitted but issue six starts with a photograph of a Hitler bust by Walter Neu and is dedicated to the Führer. The first three numbers were published under the name Jungentrucht, all three with two inlays. Starting with issue 4, the periodical is renamed "der große wagen (ein werk der jugentrucht)", still published by verlag gerhard hüttmann with like design and typography remains the same, reminiscent of the Bauhaus New Objectivity movement. Issue No. 4 with text and score laid in, but w/o photograph. Volume 5 contains a four-page supplement of "Sender," subtitled jungentrucht and quickbornjungenschaft JUNGENTRUCHT, edited by Fritz Berg, Berlin, with news for the youth movement and programs of journeys and camps on back cover; Werner Benndorf is dropped as editor. In volume 6 again with supplement, here printed in orange. The second volume (1933-1934) with six issues has all cits overs are printed in different colors with starry design and reverse white typography. This series is subtitled Deutsche Jungenzeitschrift. Issue 1 contains a supplement with a projected table of contents for this year, listing journeys, tales, history, poems, sayings, songs, citations, and a category "interpretation of mind (Sinndeutungen)." Editorial control starting with this issue is attributed to Karl Daniel, Leipzig. Trucht is named as publisher. Starting with issue 4, Karl Müller, Saarbrücken, is named as the new editor. The typography is adjusted back to regular upper and lower case, June 1934, compare to general lower case until December 1933. However, the October and December 1933 issues are the only ones with a Swastika printed to front free endpaper. The issue of November 6th, 1934 contains an insert by the publisher, Verlag Günther Wolff, Plauen, dated December 4, 1934, regarding availability and publisher's binding options for collections of Der grosse Wagen. The final issue, volume 3, no. 1, was published in January, 1935. Announced are six issues by editor Dr. Karl Müller, published by Günther Wolf. In 1935 the Jugendtrucht was banned, the publication ceased, and the "Jungenschaften" were integrated into the Hitler Youth. The final notes from the editor in the last issue, January 1935, clearly indicate the change of direction in German politics, emphasizing the allegiance to the Führer as a moral responsibility of the youth. The announced program for the upcoming issues (though never published) of the third volume addresses general questions regarding Weltanschauung (World View). They include the projected themes: God and Nature (2),The order of nature (3), and the three issues tending to National Socialist paradigms. Text in German. Very light wear. The issues are illustrated with b/w photographs, drawings, reproduction of artwork.

Seltene Zeitschrift der späten deutschen Jugendbewegung, von der insgesamt nur 13 Hefte erschienen, bevor sie 1935 aufgelöst bzw. zwangsweise in die HJ eingegliedert wurde. Hier liegen die Hefte 1-6 der 1. Reihe (Oktober 1932 bis März 1933) vollständig vor. Bemerkenswert sind die entschiedene Modernität konsequenter Kleinschreibung und die ästhetische Anlehnung der abgedruckten Fotos ans Bauhaus. Mit altem Namenszug, sonst gut erhaltenes Exemplar mit nur leichten Gebrauchsspuren.
