Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Temporal and spiritual journeys were a shared characteristic of life for mendicant friars and the laity in medieval and early modern times. This book reflects the objective approach of trained historians in its skilled deployment of source documents. Throughout these pages, we meet with wandering friars and the lay faithful, some for the first time. The contributors are international scholars. Each enquires into a specific area of study from the fourteenth to the eighteenth century. In particular, this reveals that travel in its various forms represented an intrinsic link between the four great mendicant orders: Augustinians, Carmelites, Dominicans and Franciscans. Until recently, mendicant historiography was written by and for members of each respective order. The contents are grouped thematically into three sections. The first considers the significance of travel in mendicant writings about the Eastern Mediterranean and Europe. The opening chapter examines the Old Testament traditions of the Carmelites, followed by two essays on fifteenth-century Italian Franciscans. These emphasise how travel was essential for Observant renewal to succeed. The second section of the book concentrates on early modern Spain. Travel was not limited to the outward journey. The humanist poetry of the Augustinian friar, Luis de León, attended to the inner journey of the soul during this life. The next chapter draws attention to interrelations between laity and clergy. This provides insights into the soul's journey into death according to the behaviour of the lay faithful. In the third section, we find the fact-finding journeys of Bartolomé de las Casas on land and sea, in defence of native peoples in the New World. The volume closes with a study of a Dominican friar who followed his own path rather than the accepted routine of travel for friars. By exploring a wide range of experiences over five centuries, this book shows that travel contributed to religious development in many parts of the world.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Luke Wadding was a pivotal figure in the seventeenth century. This book begins by exploring his early years in his birthplace of Waterford and the circumstances of his leaving Ireland for the European continent. As a friar Wadding enjoyed access to the most prominent centres of learning in the Iberian Peninsula. We learn about daily life as it was lived at Salamanca where Wadding became a professor of theology. We then move to Italy and the reasons for Wadding's arrival at the papal court, his scholarly travels and early publications as Franciscan chronicler, placing a specific focus on the illustration of his own books. Here and elsewhere we observe Wadding's capacity for establishing a wide circle of friends. In Rome he successfully created a nexus of knowledge and made his home at St. Isidore's College. Wadding related to the Eternal City through cultural engagement. This section of the book therefore deals with the art and architecture of Wadding's world, the cultural production of books, and the inspiration he gave for a new college in Prague. Throughout this work digs deep into Wadding's writings, his papers and recent scholarship to provide a unique and accurate account that reveals as much as possible about him. Wadding reached a position of considerable influence while achieving international recognition and maintaining connections to his family in Ireland. As such Wadding is essential to understanding the labyrinth of the papal court and the tangled politics of Ireland in the 1640s. The book charts developments in his career while maintaining chronological order. The next section reveals the damage done by a decade of war in Ireland, the limits of support for Wadding and that sense of insecurity that spread among the Irish abroad. The book closes by examining how Wadding survived to complete a publication campaign that he started a quarter of a century earlier while continuing to cultivate close contacts that protected his long-term interests after his death in 1657.2025 marks the 400-year celebration of St Isidore's Franciscan College (Collegio S. Isidoro), founded by Luke Wadding OFM for Irish friars to study for the priesthood and as a centre of theological scholarship.

8vo, pp. 60; stitched, as issued; external leaves foxed and dust-soiled, a crimp in lower margin throughout; all else very good. This case before the U.S. Supreme Court involves a boundary dispute between the two states dating back nearly 200 years. The Court rejected the states' rights argument made by Daniel Webster, representing Massachusetts, and affirmed its authority to determine the boundary, Justice Taney dissenting. The Court adopted Hazard's position, which involved a sophisticated exposition of early Constitutional history, holding [over Chief Justice Taney's dissent] that it did have jurisdiction. Ironically, Massachusetts presented a State Rights argument, that the Court might lack the power to execute its judgment against Massachusetts. Hazard, seizing a delicious opportunity, responded, "What! does Massachusetts threaten? Is Massachusetts ready to become a nullifying State, and to set up her own will in defiance of the decrees of this Court and the Constitution itself?"
