Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. 1st Edition. Provenance: Manuscript inscription of Emma Ola Alexander. 8vo (9.75 x 6.5 inches). Modern red cloth, black morocco letter plate with gilt on spine. (Page 20 torn down middle, plates lightly yellowed). Complete set of 100 plates after John James Audubon. Second Edition, revised and augmented. "The present report is a brief summary of field observations made by the writer, during the past ten or twelve years, in the State of Pennsylvania, with numerous notes from naturalists and collectors, in nearly every county in the commonwealth." (p. xiii) Warren served as state ornithologist of the State Board of Agriculture, and 19,000 copies of these revised edition books were ordered printed and distributed to legislators, schools, colleges, and a variety of governmental agencies. Warren s report features 100 color plates copied from an Audubon s Birds of America, in order to keep costs low. As a curiosity, by the time this edition was published, Warren was able to make significant commentary in his newer report. For example, the numbers of passenger pigeons had dwindled dramatically; and Warren noted that only small groups were seen, as opposed to the previous great flocks. Little did he know that this beautiful would become extinct only 24 years after the publishing of this report. For more information, please contact Natalie Zadrozna at Arader Galleries NYC. Book.
