There are some differences of content, in terms of illustrations and text, between earlier editions. This is such an outstanding book, in every way, that the Leonaur editors have gathered together all the material from previously published editions and carefully combined it to create this definitive volume for modern readers to enjoy. Young Allen was just 12 years old when the Civil War between the states erupted, yet he was destined to serve on campaign and battlefield from the Battle of the Wilderness of 1864 to Lee's final surrender at Appomattox. Allen's recollections of his military experiences naturally make gripping reading , but the inclusion of a large number of first rate illustrations to illuminate his account elevate this memoir from the excellent to the truly exceptional. While Allen's book is interesting enough on its own, this edition has been enhanced by the inclusion of a concise history of the service of the 1st Massachusetts Cavalry Volunteers during the Civil War by the regiment's historian, Benjamin W. Famous for its wild horses?introduced in the 1700s?the island has a history of attempted settlement, lifesaving stations, lighthouse keeping, and now serves as a p…rotected national park reserve.To combat the death toll of shipwrecks, the Sable Island Humane Establishment for rescuing sailors was established there in 1801. This was a pioneering, government sponsored lifesaving organization, designed to rescue crews from the "Graveyard of the Atlantic". It established refuge houses, specialized salvage crews, and lighthouses, and acting as a crucial sanctuary for shipwreck survivors.On June 18, 1812, Madison signed the Declaration of War, marking the beginning of the War of 1812. During that war, American privateers played a significant role in disrupting British maritime commerce and bolstering the American economy. Privateers often used fast-sailing schooners and sloops, well-suited for raiding and capturing merchant vessels. They captured a substantial number of British merchant vessels, far exceeding the U.S. Navy?s captures, and brought home valuable prizes. Privateers were privately owned and operated, commissioned by the U.S. government to attack enemy ships during wartime.The Crowninshield family was historically prominent in shipbuilding and merchant shipping, and political and military leadership. George Crowninshield was a captain and merchant, and he had a son Benjamin, who was a captain, merchant, ship builder, and Secretary of the Navy between 1815 and 1818, during the administrations of Presidents James Madison and James Monroe. During the war, the Crowninshields were important figures in privateering and offered three vessels of their own to the U.S. government for service as privateers. These were the ship John, the sloop Jefferson, and the ship America. They were also involved with other privateers where they had an ownership interest, such as the Ship Alexander, which had 19 owners, including George Crowninshield. Benjamin Crowninshield was for a time Captain of the Alexander.Privateer captains like Crowninshield were issued instructions, and this one shows the determination of the U.S. government that the humanitarian work of the Sable Island Humane Establishment must continue despite the war. It offered this instruction to protect it, and British ships supplying it, from American vessels.Document signed, Washington, November 7, 1812, addressed to ?Capt. Benjamin Crowninshield of the private armed Ship Alexander?: ?Additional Instruction to the Public and Private Armed Vessels of the United States. The public and private armed vessels of the United States are not to interrupt any British unarmed vessels bound to Sable Island, and laden with supplies for the humane establishment at that place. The family is one of those known as Boston Brahmins, a reference to old wealthy New England families that became influential in the development of American institutions and culture. George Crowninshield was a captain and merchant, and he had sons Benjamin, who was Secretary of the Navy between 1815 and 1818, during the administrations of Presidents James Madison and James Monroe; George Jr., who owned the first yacht to cross the Atlantic; and Jacob, who became a Congressman.On June 26, 1812, Congress declared war against the British and, in a related Act of Congress, created rules by which privately-owned ships called privateers were enlisted in capturing British vessels on the high seas, seizing their cargos, imprisoning or paroling the crew, and gaining profit from the sale of the captured ships' contents.During the war, the Crowninshields were prominent figures in privateering. Benjamin, his father George, and his brother George Jr. offered three vessels to the U.S. government for service as privateers. These were the ship John, the sloop Jefferson, and the ship America.In mid July, the brig John of Salem, captained by Benjamin Crowninshield, the future Secretary of Navy, received its privateers commission from President James Madison and Secretary of State James Monroe. The book "History of the American privateers, and letters-of-marque, during our war with England in the years 1812, '13 and '14" lists the John as one of the very first ships to bring into port captured vessels under the terms of the Privateers Act. It reads:"Among the great earliest privateer vessels was the Ship John, Captain Crowninshield. This handsome vessel was heavily armed and manned, carrying sixteen guns and a complement of one hundred and sixty men, which made her one of the most formidable privateers afloat at the beginning of the war. After a short cruise of about three weeks, in July, 1812, the John returned to port, having captured eleven vessels, of which three were destroyed and one was recaptured. Those that arrived in port were the brig Ceres; the schooner Union, from Jamaica for Quebec, with one hundred and forty-six puncheons of rum (the vessel and cargo being estimated to be worth thirty thousand dollars); the coppered brig Elizabeth, of three hundred tons, from Gibraltar for Quebec, in ballast, carrying four guns and twelve men; the ship Apollo, of four hundred tons and mounting eight 18-pounders; and a schooner from Jamaica with one hundred and sixty puncheons of rum. Three brigs, laden with lumber, were captured, but as they were inconvenient to handle they were released. Afterward the John captured the valuable brig Henry, from Liverpool for Halifax, laden with crates, salt, and coal; the ship Jane, of Port Glasgow; the brig Neptune, a new, light brig from Gibraltar bound for Halifax; the schooner Blonde, from Dominica for St. John's; and a schooner from Jamaica with one hundred and sixty puncheons of rum aboard. All of these prizes reached Salem excepting the new brig from Gibraltar, which was sent into Boston. The John shared the fate of the Buckskin, being captured by the enemy early in the war."This is the ship John?s unpublished log book for that very early trip, among the first authorized privateers bounties from the war, acquired from the Crowninshield descendants and never before offered for sale. It also contains the rules of restitution.Manuscript, evidently unpublished, 20 dense complete pages of entries, from August 4 to August 22, 1812, likely in the hand of one of the Crowninshield brothers. There is a list of seized vessels, cargo and prisoners by the privateer the Ship John, belonging to the Crowninshield family, from August 5 to August 12, 1812. The list documents the seizure of at least 8 vessels - the Union, Asturias, Grace, Richard, Apollo, Elizabeth, Russell, Ceres.The manuscript lists for the various vessels:- Date processed- Master of the ship- Departure point and destination- Prisoners paroled- Prisoners left on board- Weapons seized, including guns, powder, tools- Goods on board, both those on the bills of lading and those not invoiced, including wood, rum, and other goods- ValuesThe back 6 pages of the booklet, signed by William Shaw, clerk in Massachusetts District Court, lists the rules and regulations for "bills and orders relating to the custody and sale of prizes and distributions of prize money recognizable in this this court by virtue of the 'Act concerning letters of marque, prizes and prize goods." It goes on to list 11 detailed articles for the owners of prize vessels. We have not found this text published elsewhere, nor have we seen other documentation of prizes reach the market, no less one prepared on the ship of a future cabinet member. This may because the capture log was brought to court by Crowninshield to claim his prize and the clerk noted the process.
