Publisher's brown cloth with blind tooled borders and gilt title to the spine. The frontispiece is a view of Rowley Common, where the town's bicentennial was celebrated on September 5, 1839. Overall Very Good- condition, with wear at shoulders and spine shaking the binding. Some foxing, but text is very legible.** Thomas Gage, part of the committee tasked with commemorating the town's bicentennial, gathered together a large number of historical records, many of which are included in this volume. As such, this book offers the student of history a valuable entry into the early years of Rowley. For instance, when Gage refers to the troubles known as the "Salem Witchcraft," he includes the texts of a number of complaints brought against local women. In his Preface, Gage notes that he consulted a large number of documents, "with as much care and attention as time would permit," in order to bring the "historical mementoes of his native place" out from the "rubbish of years."** The frontispiece is a lithograph by Benjamin Champney (1817-1907), lithographer and painter best known for his role in the White Mountain school.** With an Index and Errata page at the back.** "Postage for oversized and international shipping will be calculated by size and weight. In den WarenkorbLithograph. Measuring 365 by 295mm. Margins slightly dust-soiled, corners a trifle scuffed, otherwise very good. Boston, Lane & Scott's, c. A lovely lithograph showing the rather desolate figure of W.A. Barnes with the wreck of the Anglo Saxon in the background. The ship was on voyage from Boston to Liverpool, Merseyside when it ran aground. The Boston Athenaum has a copy printed on silk.
