Paperback. Zustand: New. Language: English. About the Book: - The tale of guru pramaratan is one of the lighter productions of father Beschi, a Jesuit priest and a native of Italy. Called Viramamooni by the Tamils he was appointed by the pope to the east India mission in 1700. There are eight tales, translated by B. Babington, that show the comical side of a teacher and his disciples. About the Author: - Constantine Joseph Beschi, also known under his Tamil name of V?ram?munivar, was an Italian Jesuit priest, missionary in South India, and Tamil language littérateur. After becoming a Jesuit in 1698, he was trained in Ravenna and Bologna from where he requested and obtained, from Superior General Michelangelo Tamburini, permission to be sent to the Jesuit mission at Madurai in South India. Sailing from Lisbon he reached Goa in October 1710, from where he proceeded immediately to South India. He arrived in Madurai in May 1711. Inspired by what was done in China, Beschi adopted the native Tamilians' lifestyle in his life and in his missionary work. For example, he adopted the saffron coloured robe generally worn by a sannyasi (Indian ascetic). He visited several important centres such as Tirunelveli, Ramanathapuram, Thanjavur and, of course, Madurai to learn the Tamil language. He met with persecution in 171415 and escaped a death sentence. This gave him more time to master the Tamil language in which he soon showed great proficiency. Paperback. Zustand: New. Language: English. About the Book: - The main purpose of this work is to offer help in the study of the Tamil Language. For this purpose a Tamil tale has been selected of which a translation, vocabulary and analysis have been added. The tale of Guru Parmaratan is one of the lighter tales which illustrate a comical side of the priesthood. About the Author: - Benjamin Babington, physician and linguist. He entered the navy as a midshipman, and served at Walcheren and Copenhagen, but left the service early, and, having obtained a nomination for the Indian civil service, studied at Haileybury College, and was appointed to the Madras presidency. He possessed a remarkable faculty for languages, and soon became distinguished as an oriental scholar. He translated into English the Tamul-Latin Grammar of C. J. Beschius, and published other translations. Dr Babington was a man of remarkable and very versatile intellectual power. He was proficient in several sciences, and in all of them exact and thorough. Soon after his appointment at Guy's Hospital he gave much attention to the subject of animal chemistry, and assisted Sir Astley Cooper, Dr Bright, and others of his colleagues by making analyses of morbid products. He also wrote in the 'Medico-Chirurgical Transactions' two memoirs on the blood, in one of which he described the fat constantly present in the serum; in another he employed for the first time an expression now always used for the fluid portion of the blood, 'liquor sanguinis.' He wrote some more strictly medical papers in the 'Guy's Hospital Reports,' which are thoroughly done, but not very notable. He translated from the German Hecker's 'Epidemics of the Middle Ages,' and edited a translation of Feuchtersleben's 'Medical Psychology' for the Sydenham Society. Paperback. Zustand: New. Language: English. About The Book: This book introduces "The Adventures of the Gooroo Paramartan," a tale written in the Tamil language. It includes a translation, a vocabulary, and an analysis of the first story. The Tamul language is spoken by a population of over five million in southern India. It is distinct, not having its origins in any existing language. It may have given rise to Teloogoo, Malayaiam, and Canarese languages or shared a common ancestor with them in some ancient, now-lost tongue. Unlike other southern Indian languages that incorporate Sanskrit, Tamul mainly uses Sanskrit for conveying moral and abstract ideas in everyday conversation. Understanding Tamul is crucial for individuals involved in Indian governmental affairs, serving as a bridge to comprehend other Hindoo languages. About The Author: Benjamin Babington (1794-1866) was a notable English physician and epidemiologist. He began his education as a midshipman and later attended Charterhouse School and the East India Company College at Haileybury. After working in government in Madras, India, he returned to England, where he pursued a medical degree at Guy's Hospital and Cambridge, eventually earning his doctorate in 1831. Babington made significant contributions to the field of medicine, including inventing the first laryngoscope and conducting pioneering laryngoscopy in 1829. He was actively involved in various medical societies and played a foundational role in modern epidemiology as the founding President of the Epidemiological Society of London in 1850. Babington passed away in 1866.
