We examine whether pioneer species of terrestrial gastropods (snails and slugs) possess particular life history traits commonly associated with r-selection, using data on gastropod colonization in four areas in north-west Europe (the Kvarken and Tvärminne archipelagos in the Baltic, polder woods in IJsselmeer, and a rehabilitated quarry near Maastricht). Data on age at first reproduction, longevity, clutch size, egg size and lifetime fecundity were gathered from the literature. In order to control for potentially confounding effects of body size on life history traits, we compared the residuals from the allometric relations between life history traits and body size for pioneers and non-pioneers. In snails, all life history traits examined were related to body size. In slugs, all traits except age at first reproduction scaled with body size. Body sizes did not differ between pioneers and non-pioneers in any area. In all four areas, there were no significant differences between pioneers and non-pioneers in any of the life history traits examined, after body size had been taken into account. This indicates that pioneer terrestrial gastropods generally cannot be regarded as r-selected. Pioneer species may possess any of several life history strategies, and the combinations of traits shown by them may have little in common with the r-K selection concept. 6 pp., 3 tabs, 4.…

(All texts also given in Swedish.) - - - (Foreword by Ambassador Jan Eliasson:) "Sweden's ties to the United States go back to the very beginning, when Sweden became the first neutral country to enter a friendship treaty with the young republic. The 'firm, inviolable and universal peace and true and sincere friendship between the King, his heirs and successors and the United States' remain undiminished. Today's relations between the two nations rest on so much more than a treaty, however, not least in a great number of human contacts. As the U.S. grew, the bonds were further strengthened through the countless Swedes who left their native soil for the Great Adventure in the West. Altogether 1.2 million Swedes made the long journey in pursuit of happiness - whether defined as freedom from oppression and want, freedom of opinion and choice - or, simply, riches. Today almost five million Americans across the continent claim Swedish ancestry, and few people in Sweden lack close family connections in America. The great immigrant flow has dried up and today's Swedish immigrants usually arrive one by one, as equal Citizens of western democracies. They tend to be well educated and professional. They often return to Sweden taking with them new ideas, an entrepreneur spirit and newly acquired knowledge and values. In their impressive project, Åsa Bengtsson and Carl-Axel Valén have documented the ties that unite Sweden and America - historically as well as emotionally. The magnificent tapestries are a tribute to the many individuals - most of them nameless - who endured, persevered, and laboriously created, not only a new life, but a new country. It is my hope that these beautiful and richly detailed tapestries will lead to a deepened awareness of the Importance of Swedish immigration in the history of both our Countries, and be a source of delight and pride in our common heritage".…

This volume deals with the taxa of the family Scythrididae known from Europe and North Africa. A total of 237 species in 7 genera are dealt with. The genus Scythris with 204 species is divided into 64 species-groups, many of which are mono-typical. Diagnostic characters of the external appearance and of the male and female genitalia are presented, and notes on distribution and biology are given for every species. Forty new species are described, and nomenclatural changes are proposed. Two new combinations are noticed, and lectotypes are designated for a nuber of taxa. Stenstrup.
