In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Good. No Jacket. Special Edition. Because of the massive commercial success of the poem—which won the 1929 Pulitzer Prize for Poetry—Doubleday, Doran and Company rushed out several formats and reprintings in 1929. This is the Front Pastedown Variation, 1929 with a wonderful Civil War watercolor and ink presen…ation by George John Illian, famous for his bold, historical book illustrations, and World War I propaganda posters for the U.S. Government. There are many good points about the condition: No unwanted marks anywhere; no past names, no notes. Strong clean book with bright paper free of foxing and almost no age-toning. No dogeared pages, or tears, or creases. Very attractive pastedown on the front cover As to flaws there is some color fading or sunning along the top edge ofthe covers. The head of the spine panel is frayed. Pretty good binding although front and rear hinges are starting to show threads. Textblock is secure with nothing loose. Of course a splendid read and belongs in every home. George John Illian (illustrator).

The present collection offers a window into the literary world of American poet and humorist Ogden Nash (19021971). It is comprised of 239 volumes published between 1886 and 1971, among which are numerous presentation and association copies. All books in the present collection come from the shared personal library of Ogden and Frances Nash. The collection spans poetry, humor, light verse, and literary criticism, and includes a significant number of first and limited editions, often in original bindings or dust jackets. Of particular note are six books inscribed by Nash to his wife, Frances (including five authored by Nash, one of which is in an "Author's Copy" half-leather binding). Included in the collection are 59 works by Nash, three of which feature edits to the text in Nash's hand. Twenty-seven of these Nash publications are Author's copies bound in half-leather. There are an additional 48 volumes bearing inscriptions to Nash from other authors and poets, most notably twelve volumes inscribed by S.J. Perelman. Among the 132 uninscribed volumes included here, 45 bear Ogden Nash's ownership inscription (10 bear the ownership inscription of Frances Nash). The number and range of authorial inscriptions represented in the present collections reflect Nash's wide-ranging literary friendships and professional associations. Notable among these are twelve warmly inscribed titles by humorist S.J. Perelman, whose acerbic wit is on display in a series of affectionate, playful, and sometimes satirical inscriptions to both Nash and his wife, Frances. These volumes also reflect Perelman and Nash's shared experiences in Hollywood and the literary scene of mid-century America. Other highlights include inscriptions from John Betjeman, Christopher Morley, E.C. Bentley, A.P. Herbert, David McCord, William Plumer Fowler, and Holger Lundbergh, among otherseach evidencing Nash's influence and the esteem in which he was held across literary and cultural circles in the U.S. and the U.K. O.

In den WarenkorbFirst limited edition of the complete collection of the South Polar Times, a periodical created by Scott's crew during his two polar expeditions on the ships Discovery and Terra Nova, with a slip signed by Ernest Shackleton and Rudolph Blakenburg Quarto, three volumes, publisher's gilt decorated cloth, all edges gilt, frontispie…ce to each volume, elaborately illustrated with engravings after the expedition members' original drawings, many in color. Volumes I and II are number 177 of only 250 copies, volume III is number 256 of 350 copies. From the Adventure and Exploration collection of James Stephen âSteveâ Fossett with his bookplate to the pastedown of each volume. American businessman and record-setting aviator Steve Fossett became the first person to fly solo nonstop around the world in 2002 in his 10-story high balloon Spirit of Freedom. He completed the 2002 trip in 13 days, 8 hours, and 33 minutes and set records for both the Longest Distance Flown Solo in a Balloon and Fastest Balloon Flight Around the World. Fossett was also one of sailingâs most prolific distance record holders set the Absolute World Speed Record for airships with a Zeppelin NT in 2004. He received numerous awards and honors throughout his career including aviationâs highest award, the Gold Medal of the Fà dà ration Aà ronautique Internationale (FAI), which he was awarded in 2002. Fossett disappeared on September 3, 2007 while flying a light aircraft over the Great Basin Desert, between Nevada and California. Additional bookplates from the libraries of Dr. Edward Bramley and polar scientist Anthony Michaels. In near fine condition. Laid in is an scarce autograph album page boldly signed by Ernest Shackleton and American businessman and former mayor of Philadelphia Rudolph Blakenburg. An exceptional set. Captain Robert Falcon Scott led two expeditions to the Antarctic: on the ship Discovery from 1901â"14 and the Terra Nova from 1910â"13. Scott and his men entertained themselves during the long, dark winter months by creating the South Polar times, a monthly magazine typed and illustrated by the expedition members and read aloud to all deck hands. "It was decided that each number should contain, besides the editorial, a summary of the events and meteorological conditions for the past month, certain scientifically instructive articles dealing with our work and our surroundings, and certain others written in a lighter vein. As the scheme developed it was found that other features, such as full-page caricatures, acrostics, and puzzles, could be added; and now each month sees the production of a stout volume which is read with much interest and amusement by everyone. One of the pleasantest points with regard to it is that the men contribute as well as the officers; in fact, some of the best and quite the most amusing articles are written by the occupants of the mess-deck, of whom one or two show extraordinary ability with the pen. But beyond all else the journal owes its excellence to the principal artist, Wilson, who carries out the greater part of the illustration and produces drawings that would be appreciated any where" (Scott, The Voyage of the Discovery, 362).
