Forjada por trabajadores migrantes «autóctonos», vertebrada por el ferrocarril y por la posibilidad de viajar escondidos en los vagones de mercancías, a finales del siglo xix y principios del siglo xx se desarrolló en Estados Unidos toda una contracultura, una auténtica contrasociedad dotada de sus instituciones, sus saberes legales y sobre todo ilegales, su jerga y sus taxonomías: la cultura hobo, la «Hobohemia». Con capital en Chicago y extendiendo su radio de influencia entre el medio oeste y el oeste de los Estados Unidos, todo un ejército de pobres, a los que no les faltaban las ganas de vivir y de adquirir conocimientos, se organizó en una sociedad paralela de la que apenas quedan algunos vestigios folclóricos y cuya autonomía fue «aniquilada» por el asistencialismo social en los años treinta. A pesar de que no es raro ver un hobo que se cuela como personaje secundario en los productos culturales importados desde Norteamérica, y de que el propio Martin Scorsese realizó una adaptación más que libre de Boxcar Bertha en su segunda película (Bertha, la hermana de la carretera, 1973), la «Hobohemia» es un fenómeno muy poco conocido: son escasos los que hasta la fecha, en nuestro idioma, se han hecho eco de su fuerza, su riqueza, sus raíces, sus alianzas y sus proyecciones posteriores. En este texto, original de 1937, Ben Reitman narra la vida de Bertha Thompson, una mujer que fue prostituta, ladrona, reformadora, trabajadora social, revolucionaria. Y con los hilos de esta biografía, Reitman dibuja los entresijos del movimiento hobo, ofreciéndonos así tanto una panorámica de conjunto como una visión íntima, y no exenta de reflexión, del maremágnum de vagabundos, delincuentes, radicales y revolucionarios que poblaban los márgenes de la sociedad norteamericana de principios del siglo xx. *** Nota: Los envíos a España peninsular, Baleares y Canarias se realizan a través de mensajería urgente.
