Filippo Tommaso Marinetti compie gran parte dei suoi studi a Parigi e si afferma inizialmente come poeta in lingua francese (La conquête des étoiles, 1902; Destruction, 1904; Le Roi Bombance, 1905; La ville charnelle, 1908). Nel 1905 fonda a Milano la rivista Poesia, di un gusto ancora fra simbolista e liberty, nella quale concede largo spazio a molti poeti d'avanguardia italiani e francesi bandendo, fra l'altro, nel 1905, la celebre Inchiesta internazionale sul verso libero, ove ne pubblicizzava la struttura e la fisionomia aprendo su di esso un ampio dibattito. Nel 1909, con un "manifesto" apparso sul Figaro di Parigi, dà vita al movimento futurista, rilanciandolo 3 anni dopo col Manifesto tecnico della letteratura futurista.Nel 1910 pubblica, in francese e in italiano, il romanzo Mafarka il futurista, che suscita clamorose polemiche, e nel quale è già in atto la poetica delle "parole in libertà".Interventista (Guerra sola igiene del mondo, 1915) e volontario nella prima guerra mondiale, fascista fino alla fine, fu collocato dal regime tra i monumenti della cultura nazionale, de facto accettando il compito della apologia e della dimostrazione della inevitabilità del fascismo, compito che assolse nella fase "eroica" con Futurismo e fascismo (1924), in seguito con L'aeropoema del golfo della Spezia (1935); Il poema africano della divisione "28 ottobre" (1937); Canto eroi e macchine della guerra mussoliniana (1942) nella fase ultima di dissoluzione del regime e della  Repubblica di Salò cui pure prese parte.L'opera di Marinetti, in prosa o in versi, malgrado certi impeti lirici (cfr. Zang Tumb Tumb, 1914; L'alcova d'acciaio, 1921; Novelle colle labbra tinte, 1930; Spagna veloce e toro futurista, 1931; L'Aeropoema del Golfo della Spezia, 1935), è piuttosto turgida oratoria e azione politico-letteraria (di via via scemante efficacia), che non, come pur vorrebbe, arte liberatrice, all'avanguardia d'un rinnovamento totale. Pertanto le sue cose più importanti restano i "manifesti" del primo periodo, alcuni dei quali (come quelli sul teatro di varietà, sul teatro sintetico, ecc.) ricchi di spunti, intuizioni e precorrimenti.
