A fascinating collection of papers. A geographic atlas, used as it should be, with a number of student manuscript documents bound in. Contents comprise: The atlas Géographique, complete with the 16 double page hand coloured maps (as called for). These are all in good, clean and bright condition. There are a few ink annotations to the blank reverse of the maps - but the maps themselves are lovely. These are all of the ancient world, and state that they were produced by Libraire Hachette in 1833 or 1834. In addition to these maps, bound into the front of the atlas (between the title and the first map) are several large folding manuscript charts. Several of these have been signed Belize Romain - as this name is also doodled several times to the inside of the boards, we assume this is the student who made them. The manuscript charts are: (1) "Mesures de solidite" comparing ancient and modern measures. To the front facing leaf of this is a further manuscript text, with measurements and text; (2) "Tableau des mesures decimales" (3) "Mesures de superificie" (surface area). (4) "mesures de longueuer" (5) "mesures de contenouce." The front and rear inside boards show the evidence of a bored student, with doodles and scribbles. The outside boards are cheaply bound in stained paper, with a darkened paper label to the front board. The boards are scruffy and show signs of use. Overall a lovely students manuscript collection from the 1830's. [i], [V], 16 pp. 200 x 135 mm (7¾ x 5¼ inches). .

In den WarenkorbFirst edition, inscribed on the front free endpaper "Hubert E. H. Jerningham, administrator of British Honduras, Nov: 8. 1888". These legal codes stabilized the recently formed crown colony and introduced some early environmental laws. Sir Hubert Edward Henry Jerningham was born in 1842 to one of the great Norfolk Catholic families. He was educated at the University of Paris, entered the diplomatic service in 1866, and made second secretary in 1874. His was posted to Constantinople (1870), then Darmstadt (1872) and Vienna (1878), before retiring in 1879. He spent the following four years as MP for Berwick-on-Tweed, before his appointment as Colonial Secretary for British Honduras in 1887. This volume is one of the earliest law codes of the colony. The first 11 pages list all the local regulations which have been incorporated into the new code, along with the British statutes that would henceforth be enforced. It then covers a wide array of topics relevant to the colony's administration, such as the judicial system, mercantile laws, naturalization procedure, shipping regulations, currency, policing, transport infrastructure, and education. It also contains more specialized laws; for example, it specifies the qualifications required to become a measurer of mahogany (p. 536) and sets the penalty for illegal turtle fishing, an early environmental conservation policy (p. 860). Octavo (246 x 153 mm). Contemporary calf, red spine label. Binding a little marked and with extremities slightly worn, boards bowed, small chip to top of spine label, light foxing to front and rear: a very good copy.

Average. Exhibits severe offsetting and some soiling. Wear along original fold lines. Blank on verso. Size 26.75 x 44 Inches. This is an 1899 British Admiralty nautical chart or maritime map of the Gulf of Honduras. The map depicts the Central American coastline from Belize (British Honduras) to the Bahia de Omoa on the coast of Honduras including Amatique Bay and Livingston, Guatemala. Myriad depth soundings are indicated throughout, and coastal islands, shoals, banks, and other maritime hazards are identified. River Sarstoon, which marks the border between British Honduras and Guatemala, is illustrated and labeled, as is El Golfete, but no significant inland detail is present. Some coastal sites, such as points, hills, and settlements, including Port Livingstone and Puerto Barrios, are nonetheless noted. Five views are illustrated along the borders, each of which is labeled alphabetically. Curiously, these views are oriented as they would have been seen from certain points on the map, which are labeled with corresponding letters, instead of oriented toward the bottom of the map, as was customary. The Northern Railroad of Guatemala The Northern Railroad of Guatemala was a railroad that connected Puerto Barrios on the Caribbean coast with Guatemala City. First proposed in in 1883 by then President General Justo Rufino Barrios, the project never progressed and was forgotten following the death of Barrios at the Battle of Chalchuapa in 1885. José Maria Reyna Barrios resurrected the railroad project after he assumed power in 1892. He declared the construction of a city on the Caribbean, which he named Puerto Barrios, by executive order, and used yet another executive order to declare Puerto Barrios the 'Major port of the Republic' and shifted all customs duties there from Livingston. Barrios also brought the eyes of the world to Guatemala by declaring that his country would hold an Exposición Centroamericana in 1897 to celebrate the completion of an interoceanic railway connecting Puerto Barrios with the Port of Iztapa on Guatemala's Pacific coast. Unfortunately for Barrios, his plans, and the falling prices of coffee and silver, bankrupted the Guatemalan government and led to his assassination on February 8, 1898. The new president, Manuel Estrada Cabrera, faced crippling government debt to British banks, which forced him into an uneasy alliance the United States. He eventually contracted the Central American Improvement Co. Inc., to finish the railroad and refurbish sections that had fallen into disrepair. In exchange, the Guatemalan government granted the American company a concession to use the railroad for free. In 1904, the concession was transferred to the International Railways of Central America, which was owned by the United Fruit Company. Eventually, United Fruit controlled all of Puerto Barrios, including the banana plantations in Izabal (which they reached by railroad) and the merchant ships that carried the cargo from the docks they also operated. Eventually, a highway was constructed parallel to the railroad, leading to the closure and insolvency of the railroad. Publication History This chart was originally surveyed for the British Admiralty by Commanders R. Owen and E. Barnett from 1835 through 1841. It went through several subsequent corrections, as is common with nautical charts, with this example was published in 1899.

Very good. Some unobtrusive spotting. Centerfold reinforced at top. Size 20 x 22.75 Inches. A superb 1687 Johannes van Keulen nautical chart or maritime map of the coasts of Honduras, Belize, Mexico, and Cuba. It is one of the first, if not the first printed chart to focus on the Yucatan Peninsula. A Closer Look This southern-oriented chart illustrates the essential shipping lanes passing landward of Cuba. Place names appear in Spanish, indicating that Van Keulen's sources for his map were Spanish in origin. Cape Camaron and Cape Honduras are marked on the coast, which is broadly named 'Honduras' (at the expense of Guatemala, whose claim to the coast does not appear here.) The coastal islands of Guanaja and Utila are named. The island later known as Ruatan is here named Guayana. East of the Yucatan Peninsula the island of Cozumel, with surrounding shallows, is apparent. Several of the islands along the coast of Mexico and Belize are named. Quintana Roo appears as the island of Quitaxvenho. The Islands and Bay of Chetumal appear more recognizably. Other place names - Isla Pantoja, Isla Zaratan - appear to have disappeared in modern cartography. Further Historical Context Despite the vagaries of 17th century toponymy, Van Keulen included much intended to be useful. Throughout the chart, shallows and rocky areas are noted and important coastal approaches are accompanied with simple coastal views. The chart is decorative as well, with an attractively rendered ship, two compass roses, rhumb lines and a beautifully engraved cartouche with two putti, one coiling a plumb line, and one clambering up the cartouche to pick a flower. Publication History and Census Although they are not dated, Van Keulen's charts can generally be associated with years of publication based on typographical changes. First states of the charts from the fourth volume of Keulen's Zee-Fakkel lack page numbers and these are dated 1684. Second states, dated 1687, have a page number added to the lower left corner: this corresponds to the present example. The 1695 third state has page numbers in both lower corners. OCLC only reveals two examples in institutional collections, in later states. Several examples of the chart have appeared at auction and in dealer's catalogs over the past ten years, although most of these have proven to be of the 1695 edition of the chart or later. The chart is decorative as well, with an attractively rendered ship, two compass roses, rhumb lines, and a beautifully engraved cartouche with two putti .
