En 1800, il est nommé directeur du Prytanée de Saint-Cyr et devient membre associé de l'Académie des inscriptions et belles-lettres en 1787. Émigré en Russie, il est professeur de langue grecque à Kharkov, puis à Moscou et à Saint-Pétersbourg en 1812. Ex-libris manuscrit de l'écrivain belge Félix Van Hulst (1799 1872), professeur de droit et fondateur de La Revue de Liège. Il s'est également intéressé à l'ornithologie et à l'horticulture. Bound with the half title.A rare work on this hunting poem once ascribed to Oppian, the 2nd-century Greco-Roman poet. The manuscripts of theCynegeticaall ascribe the poem toOppian, and it was not until 1776 that the first scholar,Johann Schneider, argued that Oppian'sHalieuticaand theCynegetica must have been composed by two different poets. In order to distinguish the creator, he is generally referred to as Pseudo-Oppian. Rebacked, with the contemporary boards and later paper spine, with paper spine label.
