In den WarenkorbFive letters and one note from Elizabeth of Greece and Denmark (1904-1955), daughter of Prince Nicholas of Greece and Denmark and Duchess Elena Vladimirovna, wife of Prince Theodore of Torring-Jettenbach, all to Florence Strutt (?-1905), wife of the soldier and mountaineer, Edward Lisle Strutt (1874-1948), signed with her nickname, 'Woolly', 1934-1948. 1. 14th March, 1934, 2pp. on the death of Albert I, King of Belgium in a mountaineering accident. 'Dearest Florrie, Since a week I am here in Schloss Berg with my poor sister.I wanted to answer Bill's [Edward Strutt] letter long ago but it was impossible to find time as I am the whole day with Elizabeth [Queen Elizabeth of the Belgians] and sit up in the night till two ocl. sometimes with her. She can't sleep and is still so stunned that I am really unhappy and anxious about her. It was such a dreadful cruel thing as all happened and she loved Albert so very much one can't imagine that she can live on without him. I told her about the photo Bill would like to have and she promised to send it. She has none here that would be suitable but shall send it from Laeken. Would you like to tell this to Bill.'. Albert I of Belgium died in a mountaineering accident on17th February, 1934. This letter is dated 14th March, 1934. Edward 'Bill' Strutt was close to a number of European Royal Families. Strutt and Albert were both keen climbers, both members of the Alpine Club, Albert as Honorary Member and Strutt as President, 1935-1938. 2. 8th March, 1935, 5pp. From Laecken, home of the Belgian Royal Family. '.the people here seem to think I have the pest, and so I most fortunately have been left quite alone. I asked the doctor to come & tell me every day how my sister gets on and the really very kind Comtesse de Carman come with a teapot full of a hot tea against coughs after her very trying day in the bungalow at 9 ocl pm to see if I am all right, before going to her rooms for the night. I feel more like being in a Leana convent in Tibet on a hut in the mountains with no inhabitants far around and I think I would very much prefer to be in Browns Hotel in London. All is so complicated just now, or does it only seem so to me? From at home they are urging me to tell where I want my books, boxes and all that belongs to me sent so as they are packing up what is in the Palais. I rush about like a monkey in its cage not knowing what to do, as there is only one possibility for me: to get all brought to Seefeld [Schloss Seefeld, home of the Torring-Jettenbachs], but I shall never see those things again as Schulz shall hide them in a place under the roof of the castle. With a further sheet of drawing and measurements for the girls. 3. Undated, from the Carlton Hotel, Frankfurt, 4pp. Letter, apologising for rushing off to Frankfurt, she had an abscess and had to visit a dentist, 'I want to see you so very very much dear Florry. If nothing other is possible I shall run after you to Pommersfelden and lodge in Erwein's [Erwein von Schonborn Weisenthied] stables or pig sty'. 4. 16th December, 1939, Chateau de Laeken, 4pp. '.I long to see you again but am afraid it is not possible after trying every way to get a permit and having not succeeded one must give it up.I am at least in a new house in the mountains with baths 2 good stoves and place enough for all also for guests so that in quieter times I hope very much that both of you shall come for a long stay. My two dogs are still in good form not fat and neither myself nor they are in danger of getting it just now. 5. 5th October, 1948, Bad Kreuth/ Tegensee, Bavaria, 1948. 2pp. On the death of Edward Strutt, 'Toto, Sissy and Hansibert [husband and children?] all three of them and my daughter in law ask me to tell you how very sincerely they are in thought with you. My children and their families are safe thank god after all the bad years we all of us had to go through.'.
