In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. William Belcher (Jacket design) (illustrator). First UK Edition. First impression of the first UK edition, published in 1961. The book was first published by G.P. Putnam's Sons in the USA in 1959. ***Very good in black cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine. The boards are clean and unmarked. No bumps or creases. Corners sharp. Page block edges lightly foxed. No reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. Internally also very good with no previous ownership inscriptions. Some foxing to the endpapers, but interior pages clean. No creases or tears. ***In a very good illustrated dustwrapper, designed by William Belcher. The dustwrapper has not been price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's printed price of 21s net. Whilst the dustwrapper is virtually complete, there is some loss at the top of the spine, and quite a lot of creasing to the edges, mainly affecting the spine. A very small chip to the bottom edge of the back panel, and a light crease to the top corner of the front inner flap - but no serious tears or chips. Red titles on the spine faded to pink, otherwise dustwrapper bright. ***213mm x 147mm. 446 pages. ***FIRST TABLE OF CONTENTS: Part 1 BEGINNINGS, part 2 MIDDLES, Part 3 BIRTHS, Part 4 HIPSTERS, Part 5 GAMES AND ENDS. SECOND TABLE OF CONTENTS: FICTION, ESSAYS AND ARTICLES, JOURNALISM, INTERVIEWS, POETRY, PLAYS, BIOGRAPHY OF A STYLE. ***'Opinion about Norman Mailer's work is usually extreme. His magnificent novel "The Naked and the Dead" brought him more praise than has come the way of any young novelist for many years, while his next two books, "The Barbary Shore" and "The Deer Park" put him at loggerheads with the literary "establishment". The only certain thing about the reception of "Advertisements About Myself" is that it will stir up violent feelings.' (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper) ***'Nachem Malech Mailer (Jan 31, 1923 - Nov 10, 2007), known by his pen name Norman Kingsley Mailer, was an American writer, journalist, and filmmaker. In a career spanning more than six decades, Mailer had 11 best-selling books, at least one in each of the seven decades after World War II. His novel "The Naked and the Dead" was published in 1948 and brought him early renown. His 1968 nonfiction novel "The Armies of the Night" won the Pulitzer Prize for nonfiction as well as the National Book Award. Among his other well-known works are "An American Dream" (1965), "The Fight" (1975) and "The Executioner's Song" (1979), which won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction. Mailer is considered an innovator of "creative nonfiction" or "New Journalism", along with Gay Talese, Truman Capote, Hunter S. Thompson, Joan Didion and Tom Wolfe, a genre that uses the style and devices of literary fiction in factual journalism. He was a prominent cultural commentator and critic, expressing his often controversial views through his novels, journalism, frequent press appearances, and essays, the most famous and reprinted of which is "The White Negro". In 1955, he and three others founded The Village Voice, an arts and politics-oriented weekly newspaper distributed in Greenwich Village. In 1960, Mailer was convicted of assault and served a three-year probation after he stabbed his wife Adele Morales with a penknife, nearly killing her. In 1969, he ran an unsuccessful campaign to become the mayor of New York, finishing fourth in the Democratic primaries. Mailer was married six times and had nine children. (Wiki) ***First impression of the first UK edition, of interest to those who collect the writings of Norman Mailer. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.***.
