Report of a tour of inspection down the Clyde made by two Dutch marine engineers Beeloo and Cop on the orders of the Dutch Ministry of the Marine, visiting the dockyards of John Elder & Co., the Ingliss Brothers, Robert Napier & Sons, J. & G. Thomson and Denny and the factories of the Steel Company of Scotland, Thomas Shanks & Co., John Mc.Dowall & Sons and James Miller & Co. The work starts with an introduction to the trip and a general discussion of the choice between iron and steel for building ships, followed by brief information on the companies and detailed technical descriptions of ships and equipment. Beeloo was responsible for department of shipbuilding at the Delft Polytechnic School, and in 1883 was made chief shipbuilding engineer - "the highest position in the Marine Engineer's Corps" (DBNL). This copy was held by the "Bureau van den Inspecteur o.d. Stoomvaartdienst" - Office of the Inspector for the Steamboat Service, inked inscription to the front board and some annotations in the margins of the text. Excellent copy of an interesting and uncommon addition to the technical literature of the period. Foolscap folio (335 x 215 mm). 8 lithographed folding plans and maps, including plans of automatic ship ventilators, Whitworth 9-inch and 70-pounder breech-loading guns, together with detailed maps of Chatham and Portsmouth dockyards, 24 pages of introductory/explanatory text. Original black cloth-backed, pale grey paper-covered printed boards. A little rubbed, boards browning at the edges, pale toning of the text-block, tear in the stub of the last folding plan, not encroaching on the image, overall very good.…
