Paperback. Zustand: Good. A Queer Existence is a major documentary project that uses photographic portraiture and oral history to record the life experiences of a group of 27 gay men born since the passing of the Homosexual Law Reform Act in 1986. In New Zealand, discrimination in work was outlawed in 1993, same-sex relationships were granted legal recognition in 2005, and marriage equality followed in 2013. In 2018 Parliament apologised to those whose lives had been blighted by criminal prosecution for expressing their sexuality. As a result, these men have life experiences very different to earlier generations of gay New Zealand men. Even so, gay men growing up today may continue to feel stigmatised, and for many coming out is still a major hurdle. Candid, powerful and affecting, the first-person narratives of A Queer Existence form a valuable and unique insight into how gay men continue to have to step out of the main stream and face their own challenges as they forge their queer identities. Large; Heavy; DJ. Small graze on first page. 343 pages.…

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. Men Alone Men Together By Mark Beehre. Publisher: Steele Roberts & Associates Ltd, 2010. Very good softback, some minor edge-wear, no inscriptions. 229 pages, illustrated. Men Alone - Men Together combines photography and oral history to document the lives of 45 gay men - 14 couples, 14 single men and one trio - and how their journeys have, for the moment, led them towards or away from relationships. In their own words they recount defining moments in their lives, as well as touching on significant events in New Zealand's social history. Many of the men grew up in a world that condemned homosexuality, and in which the expression of their love for each other carried the risk of imprisonment. In contrast, it is now nearly 25 years since homosexual law reform, gay men's and women's civil rights are protected and the Civil Union Act provides legal recognition of their relationships. Men Alone - Men Together reflects the immense diversity of the gay world. These men are our workmates and neighbours. They are gardeners and jewellers, teachers and builders, priests and fathers, each with a story to tell of remarkable determination and courage. ALL PHOTOS ARE OF THE ACTUAL BOOK.
