First edition, first printing. Original blue cloth with black titles to the front and spine, in dustwrapper. An excellent near fine copy, the binding clean and firm, the spine a little rolled. The contents are entirely complete, clean throughout and without previous owner's inscriptions or stamps. Complete with the rubbed and nicked dustwrapper which is a little creased and with several short closed tears to the extremities and a touch of fading to the red lettering on the spine. John Leslie Palmer) comes a tale of murder and suspense. Valerie Beauchamp, alias Vera Brown, is a successful novelist of trashy romance novels who has recently found love in the form of a mysterious paramour who has swept her off her feet with his love letters. However, Valerie has just found out that her suitor is not only not a real person, but a joke concocted by her so-called friends. To get back at them Valerie decides to add a tontine to her will, the final survivor to inherit a fortune in the end. But before Valerie can enact her plan she is found brutally murdered. Francis Beeding was the pseudonym adopted by John Leslie Palmer and Hilary St George Saunders for their espionage-related novels. Both had attended Balliol College, Oxford and worked together at the League of Nations in Geneva, where Vernon Bartlett, journalist and author (most famously, co-authoring Journey's End, 1930) led the League's London Office before joining the BBC. The novel, set in the ongoing War, is dedicated, 'with his consent, in admiration', to Winston Churchill.…
