Both items in fair condition, lightly-aged and worn. Severin Wielobycki's letter is 1p., 12mo. On the recto of the first leaf of a bifolium. It reads: 'Dear Madam. | I am much delighted that you take interest in my brother; all friends of his are of the same opinion tat he has been treated very unjustly. I hope your influence wi…ll if not relieve him, at any rate shorten his horrible sentence. | I beg to enclose two copies of the document according to your request' (only one copy present). The report of 'Dr Wielobycki's Trial' is 1p., 4to, on grey paper, in two columns of small print. The case was a cause celebre, and centred on the forging of Margaret Darling's will by her sister Isabella Darling and Dionysius Wielobycki, the latter being sentenced to fourteen years' transportation (the sentence does not appear to have been carried out). According to the Annual Register, 'The trial and its result occasioned great sensation in Edinburgh, where the prisoner was extensively known.' The first paragraph reads: 'THIS trial, which was ended last night, has been the cause of intense excitement, and its result will fill many a home with poignant regret. Whatever the Doctor's demerits, he had fixed himself deep in the affections of a large number of friends; and however strong the evidence of his legal blame-worthiness, thousands still refuse to believe in his moral guilt, and tens of thousands will be constrained to question that substitute for moral justice known under the term "law."' An account follows of 'the case from the beginning' and of 'Dr Wielobycki's career' ('In Carnegie Street - a poor locality - he had a lodging corresponding to his means, and there, by incessant attention to the sick among the poor, earned a scanty living, but secured the confidence and esteem of all who knew him. His professional reputation rose fast and extended far, [.] The income of this "foreigner" was rising to as many hundreds as his brethren could muster tens; and, to crown his causes of offence, he followed the homoeopathic instead of the allopathic system - a crime for which the "legitimate" practitioners had no forgiveness.' In the account of the case Dionysius Wielobycki is said to have acted out of 'benevolence', 'while the woman who conceived and executed the forgery for her own behoof [Isabella Darling], and for the avowed purpose of "cheating" her nephew and nieces, has been returned unpunished to society'. The final paragraph describes the passing of the sentence and 'appearance of the prisoner in Court'. No copy of the printed document on either COPAC or OCLC WorldCat. [Wikipedia] "Severin Wielobycki (8 January 1793 7 September 1893) was a Polish centenarian physician who lived in Edinburgh and London. A controversial homeopath during a period of scientific focus, his adventurous life ranged from being a soldier in the Kraków Uprising and being a noted botanist, vegetarian, non-smoker and teetotaller. He was fluent in Polish, German, French, Russian and English.".

(and :) 2. Gregorij Connarij comendet praescripta epistolam Victorino praeceptori suo v + emendet. Dated at end : Bologna, 3 July. One and three quarter pages of text with corrections & deletions. (and :) (3) Epistola Gregory connari Pronotary ad Joannes Monacum Cartusine. [11 1/2] pages of text with corrections, deletions & marginal notes, dated at end : Florence, 5 March 1448. 1. A letter of congratulation by the papal Proto-notary Apostolic Connarus to the 'illustrious virgin Cecilia de Gonzaga ' for becoming a Clarissan nun in 1445 at the age of 19. The Mantuan noblewoman (1426-1451) was a humanist scholar famous for her learning & chastity and her outstanding beauty and elegance. Educated by Vittorino da Feltre, she had become an accomplished classicist in a School founded by him in Mantua in 1423. Connarus praises her for renouncing worldly honours & pleasures and for devoting her life to God; he exhorts her to exchange her studies of the poets inspired by her tutor Vittorino for reading the works of the Holy Fathers. The letter would have been sent on behalf of the Venetian pope Eugene IV (1431-47), a friend of art and learning. Cecilia had rejected the wishes of her father, Gianfrancesco Gonzaga, Marquess of Mantua (1395-1444), who wanted her to make a dynastic marriage to Oddantonio da Montefeltro, first duke of Urbino. The marquess had invited Vittorino da Feltre to become tutor to his family of five children and to make Mantua a centre of art and learning. The manuscript is strictly contemporary to the events. Cecilia de Gonzaga died 3 years later in 1451 at the age of 26. (The outstanding early 15th century medallist Pisanello (c1380-c1455) favoured by the Gonzaga dynasty honoured Cecilia's noble character with a portrait showing her with a unicorn struck in 1447, predating this manuscript by one year). 2. Gregory Connarus here recommends the papal letter to Vittorino da Feltre (1378-1446) the celebrated humanist teacher of Cecilia de Gonzaga, amended with notes and comments by the editor Johannes Maguntius. Vittorino was trained at Padua and made his reputation as a teacher of Latin and Greek. In his new role in Mantua, he had permission to found and direct an innovative mixed boarding school for gifted boys and girls of all classes to impart humanist learning and culture; the School, his dream realized, became known as 'La Gioconda' for its happy environment and ensured his lasting fame as one of the first great modern educators. 3. A lengthy theological discourse by Connarus to a Carthusian monk, at a time when the Order was at its greatest influence across Europe. The scholarly manuscript deserves detailed study; it is well preserved; originally bound in a sammelband with consecutive numbers inked in centre blank tailend margins; for manuscripts by Johannes Maguntinus (Johann von Mainz), see : Marie Antonietta Casagrande Mazzoli & Mauro (University of Udine) 'La tabula ad regandum' recording 23 manuscripts by Johannes Maguntinus. Offered jointly: Vittorino da Feltre (Rambaldoni 1378-1446) humanist educator; posthumous circular medallion portrait by Pisanello [Antonio di Puccio Pisano] engraved c1800 by Johann Heinrich Lips. Victorinus Feltrensis Summus. Ex museo Pisanorum Veneto. 7.7 x 8 cm; overall size 15.6 x 14.5 cm; watermarked.
