Antoine Béclère (1856-1939) a été le grand initiateur en France de la radiologie, s'étant entièrement consacré à son développement et à sa vulgarisation. Il fut chef de service à l'hôpital Tenon, puis à l'hôpital Saint-Antoine. Son service de radiologie, à Saint-Antoine, a été considéré comme le premier d'Europe, au début du 20ème siècle. Il fut membre de l'Académie de médecine. Cet ouvrage fondamental est dédicacé aux Docteurs Oudin et Barthélémy. Béclère édifie une sémiologie radiologique, comparable à la sémiologie stéthoscopique érigée par Laennec 80 ans auparavant, marquant le début du diagnostic radiologique de la tuberculose.

Antoine Louis Gustave Béclère (1856-1939 ) der "Vater der französischen Röntgenologie", in dem von ihm aus eigenen Mitteln im Hospital Tenon eingerichteten Röntgenlaboratorium organisierte er Ende 1897 die erste Vorlesung für medizinische Röntgenologie in der Welt. Schon ab 1897 ließ er allen Patienten seiner Station bei ihrer Einlieferung systematisch die Lungen durchleuchten; dies war die erste echte systematische Untersuchung auf Lungentuberkulose, Er setzte sich vehement dafür ein, dass die Röntgenologie beziehungsweise Radiologie nur unter ärztlicher Aufsicht angewandt werden dürfe. Ab 1902 widmete er sich auch der Krebspathologie und Therapie mit Röntgenstrahlen und konnte bald Erfolge beim Brustkrebs, bei Uterusmyomen, bei Erkrankungen des Verdauungskanals und erstmals 1908 bei der Bestrahlung von Hypophysentumoren vorweisen. Béclère hat die radiologische Entwicklung stets auch außerhalb seines Heimatlandes verfolgt und privat sowie auf Kongressen engen Kontakt mit Fachkollegen gepflegt. Er war Inhaber hoher in- und ausländischer Auszeichnungen, Titel und Orden (unter anderem Ehrenpräsident der von ihm 1908 gegründeten Société de Radiologie Médicale de France, Kommandeur der Ehrenlegion, seit 1928 Alterspräsident der Académie de Médecine, Präsident des 3. Internationalen Radiologenkongresses 1931 in Paris).
