The Royal Commission on Historical Manuscripts (abbreviated as the HMC) was established in 1869 "to make enquiry as to the places where manuscripts and private papers of historical interest were located and to report on their contents". The HMC's offices were located at Quality House, Quality Court, Chancery Lane, close to the old Public Record Office. The general public were able to visit Quality House during regular office hours to use the National Register of Archives, a computer database of archival references drawn from catalogues and published lists of manuscripts, useful for the study of British history, held in private hands and repositories in both the UK and overseas. Uncut copy bound in a half cloth binding with blind supple boards, title label (in French) on spine. Boards of the binding soiled and stained, margins of untrimmed copy a bit dustsoiled, title page soiled. On the whole a clean copy with the maps in very good condition. Provenance. Copy from the library of Louis Raymond de Montaignac de Chauvance (1811 - 1891) with his printed ex-libris on the first paste down. This first owner played an important role in the French navy and was e.g. Ministre de la Marine (1874-1876). Rare exhaustive report presented to both Houses of Parliament on the geography , hydrography, economy, logistics of British harbours. This second report on the subject includes all the ports of Ireland , Island of Man and most of the ports of England. Zu a): Sir Francis Beaufort (1774-1857), englischer Admiral und Hydrograph, war der eigentlich neuere Entdecker der Südküste Klein-Asiens (Karamania) und damit ?Wegweiser für alle nachfolgenden Entdeckungen?-(C. Ritter). 1810 betraute ihn die englische Admiralität mit der Aufnahme und hydographischen Erforschung der karamanischen Küste, die bis dahin unbeschrieben und größtenteils unbekannt war. Beaufort?s Aufnahmen begannen 1811 an der Westküste am Jedi Burun und umspannten die Küste ostwärts bis zur Ebene von Ajas (Aegae) im Golf von Alexandretta. Ein Überfall türkischer Fanatiker, bei dem Beaufort schwer verwundet wurde, setzte hier seinen Unternehmungen im Juni 1812 ein Ende.
