Decorative Cloth. Zustand: Very Good. First Edition. Boston: Little Brown, 1863. First edition. Dark brown cloth decoratively blindstamped, gold titles, 4 defined compartments. Frontispiece engraving of Beattie with facsimile signature, protective tissue. (lxxvi, Memoir of Beattie), 239 pp. including advertisement, preface, poetry. Beattie, 1735-1803, was a noted Scotch poet and professor of moral philosophy at Marischal College in Aberdeen. His fame in his own lifetime rested on two works, Essay on the Nature and Immutability of Truth (1770), an attack on Hume, and The Minstrel (1771-74), contained in this collection, an autobiographical poem in Spenserian stanzas. In describing the formation of a poet's mind, The Minstrel emphasizes the effect of nature; the poem influenced the 19th-century romantics, particularly Lord Byron. Top of spine chipped with 3 cm. loss of material, bottom frayed. From the collection of Captain William Sturgis of Barnstable.
