Edizione plantiniana del 1625 dell'«Ufficio della Beata Vergine Maria», fissato nella forma tridentina da Pio V e destinato alla devozione privata in tutte le sue sfaccettature, dalla recita delle ore canoniche all'ufficio dei defunti sino alla commemorazione dei principali snodi del calendario liturgico. Tutte le sezioni sono corredate da belle rubriche e capilettera in rosso. Le tirature plantiniane di questi Officia diffuse a partire dalla fine del Cinquecento sono celebri per cura tipografica e apparato iconografico: frontespizio inciso, vignette allegoriche, iniziali istoriate e tavole calcografiche a piena pagina che accompagnano i momenti principali dell'Ufficio. La presente edizione del 1625 si colloca in questa tradizione e rappresenta uno dei prodotti di maggior prestigio della bottega Moretus, erede di Plantin, la più importante tipografia anversese d'età barocca. L'«Officium» costituì per oltre un secolo il principale riferimento per la devozione cattolica europea: testo di privata preghiera e insieme libro d'arte uno dei vertici dell'arte tipografica seicentesca. Le edizioni plantiniane degli Officia mariani, per raffinatezza tipografica e apparato iconografico, sono oggi frequentemente esposte nei maggiori musei di storia del libro e della tipografia, oltre che nel Plantin-Moretus Museum di Anversa, interamente dedicato all'arte tipografica barocca. Recto (Psalm 50) shows a large, elaborate woodcut of the Crucifixion, framed within a woodcut border populated with Biblical characters (a saint astride a dragon, Eve before the Tree of Knowledge, Mary instructing the archangel Gabriel, etc., but also a secular hunting scene with a horn-blowing hunter, a stag, a rabbit, and a barefoot servant. Large 17mm decorated letter D in blue, red and gold, and smaller letters G and S in red and gold, and an ampersand in blue and gold. The verso (Psalm 22 and others) shows text surrounded by woodcut border populated with biblical scenes and vine scrolls, as well as a grotesque figure composed of human, fish, and bird elements. (1759), in-4°, 23 x 18 cm, title with copper engraved vignet + (41) + copper engraved frontispiece + 870 pp + (2)(index, printer's mark) with 56 full-page copper engravings (with numerous woodengraved intials, black leather binding, on the covers a triple blindtooled fillet, raised back, gilt title on back, two copper clasps, strikingly crisp copy without any stains or wear (fully unused). Large and unusually richly illustrated officium. These liturgical books of the Roman Church were ment for private prayer and therefore usually published in smaller formats. The printing house of Plantin developped the tradition of printing luxuriously editions under the influence of the Infante Isabella in the early 17th century. She subsized a first in-4° edition in 1601 with 41 full page engravings. There were several reprints in the 17th & 18th century.
