Out of the beautiful but harsh Canadian wilderness came the rugged leaders who defended New France from Britain as those two countries struggled for control of North America. Unfortunately, the extraordinary accomplishments of these great partisan leaders often become lost in the telling of the larger story of the colonial conflicts. Volume One tells the stories of two great partisans, Jacques LeMoyne de Ste. Hélène and Charles-Michel de Langlade. Ste. Hélène led the grueling winter attack on Schenectady and battled brilliantly in the siege and battle of Quebec in 1690. The other nine LeMoyne brothers, who were some of the greatest leaders in New France's history, are also discussed in Ste. Hélène's chapter. Langlade's fame and reputation for fearlessness grew out of his roles in the 1752 attack on Pickawillany, Braddock's Defeat on the Monongahela and, ultimately, the battle for Quebec. A brief chapter on primitive trekking describes the tools and techniques that enabled the partisans to survive under the most extreme and demanding conditions. Bob Bearor received the Croix de St. Louis from his fellow reenactors in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the field of living history. An expert in 18th century woods warfare and survival techniques, he served as a consultant to the BBC production, "Ray Mears' Extreme Survival." This book is generously illustrated with photos and artwork, and contains a full name index. (2002), 2008, 5.5" x 8.5", paper, index, 122 pp. [B2068].…

Soft cover. Zustand: New. No Jacket. A new history of this famous event, as told by an experienced Adirondack hunting guide and re-enactor who trekked over the sites in period clothing and equipment, made countless camps throughout the hills, searched out travel routes, and tried to substantiate the times and conditions recorded in contemporary journal entries in order to separate fact from fiction. He also describes events leading up to the battle and provides biographical information about the two charismatic leaders, Rogers and Langis. While accounts of Rogers' exploits are numerous, here we finally learn more about Langis, the real hero of this contest. (1997), 2004, 51/2x81/2, paper, index, illus., maps, 120 pp. [B0619HB].…

In this Bob Bearor's third and final book in the 'Leading by Example' trilogy we learn of the exploits of Nicolas D'Allieboust de Manthet who, in the late seventeenth century, routed Iroquois warriors at the Lake of Two Mountains, helped mount an attack on Albany, and led punitive raids against the Mohawks. This work also records the accomplishments of French-Canadian partisan fighters who were active during the last great war for the empire from 1754 to 1760. The three Native American warriors - Piskaret, Escumbuit and Grey Lock - who kept the New England frontier in disarray during this time are introduced by George "Peskunck" Larrabee who powerfully relates their fascinating stories. Also included, is a segment by Canadian author, Francois Gousse, on Lieutenant Wolff, a German who accompanied Baron Dieskau to North America in 1755 and went on to become a very successful partisan leader among the Lake Champlain-Lake George corridor. Bearor closes discussing the paritsan leader, Jean-Baptiste Levreault de Langis de Montegron (Langy), whose remarkable career included participation in the siege of Fort Beausejour, successful attacks on Fort Bull and Oswego in 1756 and providing services against Rogers' Rangers between 1757 and 1760. Bearor gives us a valuable look into war from the perspective of those who fought desperately and lost everything. Illus., Biblio., Index, 218 pp. [B2514 ].…
