In den WarenkorbNo. 1, January, 1896. The first issue of this periodical that featured various writers and artists of the nineties, the most prominent and recognizable of whom was Beardsley. Publisher's pink boards; some wear, especially at the extremities; hinges broken; bookplate; 1948 gift inscription, good to very good. The homemade or perhaps custom made, but nicely done, jacket is plain brown paper on which the cover illustration (designed by Beardsley, but on white or cream paper) is mounted. The jacket has marginal wear and chips, missing small portions at the spine ends, which have also suffered on the binding; the jacket wear corresponds to wear to the volume. In den WarenkorbCloth. Zustand: Good. Two volumes in one of the influential short-lived illustrated monthly magazine of the Decadent movement, with the original paper wraps by Aubrey Beardsley bound inside. The first editions of Nos. 3 and 4 of The Savoy, the short-lived illustrated monthly magazine of short stories, articles and poems from W.B. Yeats, Aubrey Beardsley, and Ernest Dowson among others, edited by British poet and literary editor Arthur Symons. Two volume bound in one, rebound in blue cloth. The publisher's original paper wraps are preserved and bound at the beginning and end of each volume, designed by Beardsley. Volume I contains seven plates, as well in-text ink illustrations by Beardsley, with The Stone Bath lithograph by Charles H. Shannon missing. Volume II contains all seven plates, and in-text illustrations by William T. Hornton. Publisher's original advertisements to rear of each volume. Celebrating the reactionary Decadent artistic movement against Victorian traditions and morals at the end of the nineteenth century, The Savoy contains opinons and artworks of leading Aesthetic figures of the period. Despite its legacy, the magazine was short-lived and only ran in 1896, due to both the magazine's association surrounding the recent imprisonment of Oscar Wilde, a friend of many of the contributers, and the controversy surrounding the publisher Leonard Smithers, a prolific publisher of Decadent literature known for the pornographic 'Erotika Biblion Society'. Two volume bound in one, rebound in blue cloth. The publisher's original paper wraps are preserved and bound at the beginning and end of each volume. Externally, mostly smart, with a couple of minor marks. Slight rubbing to joints and bumping to the head and tail of the spine, and to the extremities. Renewed end papers are mostly clean with slight offsetting to free end papers. Internally, missing Stone Bath lithograph to I, otherwise firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean, with the odd faint spot. Browning and spotting to paper wraps. Damp offsetting to top edges of pp.96-97, and to 98-99. Good. Various [inc. Aubrey Beardsley, Max Beerbohm et al.] (illustrator). book.…

A complete set of an important international literary and artistic icon: arguably the most important and influential periodical of the Art Nouveau period. The Yellow Book was an illustrated quarterly magazine devoted to literature, art and aesthetics, published in London from 1894 to 1897. Aubrey Beardsley was the founding editor until his association with Oscar Wilde resulted in his dismissal, following Wilde?s arrest. The Yellow Book consistently featured highly important avant-garde artists and writers (Pennel, Houseman, Sickert, Beerbohm, Australian artist Charles Conder, Kenneth Grahame, W.B. Yeats, Walter Crane, Arnold Bennett, Charlotte Mew, Henry James, Edmund Goose, Richard Le Gallienne, etc. etc.) who came to typify the artistic and literary movements of the time. The publication went through a number of reprints from the late 1890s through to around 1920, which are notoriously difficult to identify. Denny, The Yellow Book : A Selection (1949), notes: ?All the volumes [of The Yellow Book] were reprinted. They were, however, not sold to the trade in the ordinary way, but were circulated by what can only be described as irregular methods and passed off as first editions. A later generation at the Bodley Head makes this painful avowal in the interests of truth.? Lasner remarks: ? it appears that since the ?original issue? meant to include publishers? advertisements bound in at back, no volume without the advertisements can be a true first edition.? Lasner also notes that an edition statement has been printed on the front cover of certain subsequent issues, and remarks upon the word ?April? on the front cover of Vol. I.
