Good condition, octavo, three quarter leather, with blue boards, some loss to spine and hinges cracked but binding holding firmly, binding probably early 19th century, internally clean and very bright, frontis portrait engraved by G. Vertue as are fold out view of Charter House and engraving of memorial, xvi plus 275 pages and errata. This would be very good plus based on the text block, the binding would reward re-backing. First edition. Illustrated with an engraved frontispiece portrait of Sutton, a folding prospect of the Charterhouse buildings and grounds, and a plate depicting Sutton"s elaborate monument. Collated, complete. An illustrated biography of Thomas Sutton and early institutional history of the Charterhouse.Bearcroft traces Sutton"s ancestry, career and accumulation of wealth before examining his purchase of the former Carthusian monastery and the creation of his charitable foundation. Established in 1611, Sutton"s bequest provided an almshouse for eighty impoverished gentlemen and a free education for forty boys. Philip Bearcroft (1695-1761) was an English clergyman and antiquary who had himself been educated at Charterhouse. Appointed the insitution's preacher in 1724, he became Master of the Charterhouse in 1753 and subsequently held a prebendal stall at Wells Cathedral. ESTC No.: T149589. In a contemporary full calf binding. Externally, worn. Rubbing and bumping to extremities, resulting in slight loss to calf. Rubbing to boards with the odd scuff, resulting in surface cracking, flaking and small rounded patches of loss. Cracking to upper portions of joints. Splitting halfway down to center of spine with rubbing and creasing. Loss to head of spine. Faint shelf annotation to tail, largely erased by rubbing. Bookplate of Rowland Hunt to front paste down. Previous owner's contemporary ink inscriptions and annotations to head of front endpapers, with one ownership inscription of Rowland Hunt, dated 1798, and another dated 1742. Internally, generally firmly bound. Hinges strained in places, but firm. Slight tide marking to margins of portrait plate. Pages generally bright and clean if slightly age toned with light scattered spotting and one or two handling marks to fore edge. Slight splitting at the foot of the central fold of folding prospect.
