In den WarenkorbFirst edition. Small octavo. pp xii, 264. Two engraved plates and title-page vignette. Period binding of half burgundy calf with raised bands, gilt decoration, morocco title-label, marbled boards. The author describes conditions in the most poverty-stricken areas of London, including St Giles, Saffron Hill and Bermondsey. On the front pastedown is the armorial bookplate of Lord Farnham. On the verso of the front free endpaper is an ownership inscription which someone has failed to ink out thoroughly enough to render it illegible, and which reads, ''H.A. Sotheran, 136, Strand, W.C., May 9th 1889''. This was the address of the booksellers Willis and Sotheran, a former incarnation of the present firm of Sotheran's. Foxing on the plates has also affected the contiguous pages. Spine slightly faded. Covers slightly rubbed at the edges. Very good indeed. Uncommon.

In den WarenkorbCloth. Zustand: Very Good. None (illustrator). An extremely scarce first hand account of the severe poverty of Victorian London. A scarce work, here in the 1852 second edition. This is the work of the Reverend Thomas Beames, a preacher and assistant at St. James, Westminster. After witnessing first hand the extreme poverty within Victorian society, within this volume he compiled eye witness accounts of the suffering taking place within some of the most notorious slum areas of the city, known as rookeries. To the front pastedown is a note from a contemporary owner that this was 'given to me by Lord Ingestre', the 18th Earl of Shrewsbury, who was a naval commander and Conservative politician. Also to the front pastedown is a former owner's inscription, 'D. L. Cumming'. In the publisher's original cloth binding. With mark to the boards, discolouration and significant bumping to spine, and slight starting to joints. Both a contemporary and a former owner's inscription to front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are clean and bright. Very Good. book.
