Die Exponate sind eingebettet in die neue Sammlungspräsentation 'Zeiten und Räume', mit der sie in Wechselwirkung treten und neue Lesarten öffnen. Baumgartens Schaffen kreiste um die Frage nach dem Eigenen und dem Fremden, um den europäischen Blick auf fremde Kulturen und ferne Räume. Besonders eindrucksvoll sind neben seinen Fotografien die installativen Arbeiten, die eine sinnlich-haptische Wirkung entfalten und auf subtile Weise anregen, über globale und sozialpolitische Themen nachzudenken. Lothar Baumgarten studierte von 1961 bis 1971 an der Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, u. a. bei Joseph Beuys. 1978/79 reiste er ins Amazonasgebiet und lebte dort 18 Monate bei zwei Stämmen der Yãnomãmi am oberen Orinoco in Venezuela. Er war mehrfach Teilnehmer der documenta und erhielt neben zahlreichen anderen Auszeichnungen 1984 den Goldenen Löwen der Biennale von Venedig für seine Arbeit America Señores Naturales.
