The ".title of this book is misleading for instead of an account of travels, the text contains a rambling history of the French occupation of Louisiana, with observations on the form of government, on Negro slavery and other general topics, and notes on the Indian tribes" (Streeter). Baudry went to Saint Domingue in 1777 and served as a military and political leader of the colony, defending it against the revolutionaries until he was wounded in 1792. After a brief respite back in France Baudry ventured to the United States in 1793. His accounts of his travels in Louisiana in 1802 and 1803 are among the many French writings that appeared about the region during the brief months between Spain's retrocession of Louisiana to France and Napoleon's sale of the territory to the United States.
