Pencil drawing, 263 x 428 mm., fugitive note in pencil lower right; mounted. A superb and finely-detailed pencil sketch of Port Louis, Mauritius, with the Géographe riding at anchor in the exact spot Baudin noted in his journal. At the time, Port Louis was the most important harbour in the Indian Ocean and the forward base for all of the French voyages of Australian discovery and exploration from La Pérouse to Freycinet, but is now most famous for Governor de Caen's detention of Flinders, just a few years after this sketch was made. This marvellous harbour scene is firmly attributed to Charles-Alexandre Lesueur (1778-1846). Lesueur was appointed to the Géographe because of his skills as a scientific artist: such was his ability that on their return to Paris he and his great friend François Péron were appointed artists in the studio run by Jacques-Gérard Milbert (another voyage veteran) to produce the official account. Together they produced what is now recognised as one of the greatest pictorial collections relating to any of the major voyages, held at the Muséum d'histoire naturelle in Le Havre. In the foreground, ranged dramatically towards the viewer, are the cannons of the fort on the low-lying Ile aux Tonneliers, with Lesueur himself depicted sketching between two of the guns. The background is dominated by the dramatic ridges of the mountains, while the foreshore is rendered in accurate detail, ranging from the Trou Fanfaron on the left to the open country on the right. Although not signed, the view tangibly develops a simple preliminary study by Lesueur held in Le Havre, which has an identical perspective and includes the main features of the foreground, including the fort itself, the details of the ramparts and the position of the Géographe ("suite de la vue prise ? l'île aux tonnelliers [sic]", Baglione & Crémière, p. 52). Stylistically and technically, the drawing also closely resembles two very similar views of Timor and Port Jackson engraved for the official account, both also after Lesueur, and both of which show the Géographe from an almost identical angle. It is certainly possible that the present scene was being considered for publication as the third of the three main European settlements visited on the expedition, but was ultimately abandoned. Original works by Lesueur are exceptionally rare on the market, doubly so such a major voyage piece, with the Géographe prominently figured: any original depiction of the ship is an important discovery, let alone such a comprehensive view of this Literature: Gabrielle Baglione & Cédric Crémière, Charles-Alexandre Lesueur (Le Havre, 2009); Nicolas Baudin, The Journal of Post Captain Nicolas Baudin. Translated from the French by Christine Cornell (Adelaide, 1974); J.B.G.M. Bory de St. Vincent, Voyage to and Travels through the four principal islands of the African Seas. (London, 1805); Jean Fornasiero, Lindl Lawton & John West-Sooby (eds), The Art of Science (South Australia, 2016); Péron, François & Louis de Freycinet, Voyage de Découvertes aux Terres Australes. (Paris, 1807-1816). . Provenance: From a portfolio of works belonging to Baudin voyage artist Jacques-Gérard Milbert when he was in the USA (between 1815 and 1823), which is known to have included at least one other Lesueur watercolour and several of Milbert's own important American views; Milbert gifted the portfolio to a friend and former student, and it remained with the latter's family until about 1990, when it was sold to an art dealer in California. A little browning and some light creasing to the paper (particularly noticeable on the margins), generally very good, the actual scene crisp and clear.

4to., (11 x 7 inches). Half-title. 18 engraved plates on India paper and mounted on heavier stock (some marginal staining), numerous wood-engravings in the text. Near contemporary calf backed marbled paper boards (extremities rubbed). THE PASTRY WAR First edition. The views include images of the West Indies and Mexico. In 1838 Baudin's fleet was sent to blockade Veracruz, which it did with great success: "by engaging the military and depriving Mexico of import duties, its principal source of revenue, France impeded Mexico's attempts to reconquer its rebellious northeastern province, Texas, and avenge the Mexican defeat at the battle of San Jacinto. When negotiations failed to satisfy France's complaints, Baudin's squadron leveled the supposedly impregnable citadel of San Juan de Ullóa on November 27, 1838, earning Baudin international fame as the "hero of San Juan de Ullóa." During the bombardment of the citadel, Baudin's forces further disabled the Mexican army by capturing Gen. Mariano Arista (a future president) and wounding Gen. Antonio López de Santa Anna, whose leg had to be amputated. The Duke of Wellington proclaimed this victory to be the only known instance in history of a regularly fortified citadel's being taken solely by naval force. Accounts vary regarding the ultimate success of the mission, however, because Mexico expelled the French soon after Baudin's departure for Texas, where he became an honorary Galvestonian in May 1839. Louis Eugène Maissin, his aide-de-camp and later chief of staff, published a book in Paris at the end of 1839 describing their military experiences with Mexico and their friendly visit to Texas. His report on the commercial and military potential of the Republic of Texas and the brave and industrious Texans contributed to France's decision to recognize the republic. The role of Baudin in Texas history has been compared to that of the Marquis de Lafayette in the American Revolution, because Baudin and Lafayette personified France's aid to the young republics during their struggles for independence. After a distinguished career Baudin was promoted to admiral by Napoleon III only days before his death, on June 7, 1854" (The Handbook of Texas online). Palau 30412; Sabin 5832; Streeter 1343.

An early bird's-eye view of Sydney First issue. Engraved map. Plate II from 'Voyage de decouvertes aux terres australes. Atlas Francois Peron' (1807), the official account of the Baudin expedition to Australia. An attractive bird's-eye view of Sydney which includes an extensive key to 38 locations. Nicolas Baudin's exploration of Sydney and the surrounding area was not part of his original commission. However, the expedition's extended sojourn at Port Jackson began in May of 1801, where he replaced his ship, the 'Naturaliste', with the 'Casuarina', and then sent a number of his crew back to France. The 'Géographe' arrived in Port Jackson in mid-1802, and then the whole expedition departed northwards in November of 1802. The Baudin Expedition In 1800, Napoleon Bonaparte commissioned captain Nicolas Thomas Baudin (17541803) to complete the discovery of "Terra Australis". He duly set fort with two ships, 'Le Geographie' and 'Le Naturaliste' in order to find a strait which supposedly divided the Australian island in two halves. The French zoologist François Auguste Péron (17751810), who had studied under the anatomist George Cuvier in Paris, was the naturalist of the expedition, and Louis Claude de Saulses de Freycinet (17791842) served as cartographer. Meanwhile, Matthew Flinders was also attempting a circumnavigation of the Australian Continent, and the explorers met each other in the consequently named "Encounter Bay". Although Flinders completed the task before Baudin's expedition, he had the misfortune to be captured and imprisoned for six years at Mauritius on his voyage home, and his charts and manuscripts also held hostage. This allowed the French explorers to print their account of the new discoveries before Flinders, and to produce the first complete chart of the Australian continent in 1807. When Baudin died during the voyage in 1803, Freycinet took over command, much to the relief of all, and brought the expedition back to France. On the return of the expedition, Péron was charged with producing the narrative for publication. However, he died in 1810 before the second volume had been finished, with the result that the work had to be completed by Freycinet.

Separate issue Later issue. Double-page engraved chart. A very fine example, of this separately issued chart of the south Australian coastline from Cape Adieu to Wilsons Promontory, showing Baudin's discoveries in 'Le Geographe' and 'Le Casuarina'. Decorated with two lovely cartouches designed by Charles-Alexandre Lesueur, depicting kangaroos, emus, parrots, and local flora. With "HydFr. No. 636" upper right, and "Prix 1F-50c" lower right. The chart is one of the earliest of the coastline around Adelaide, "B. Dugueselin", "C. Sully" and "C. Mondovi", and includes the complete coastline of Kangaroo Island, "Ile Decres", which had only charted partially by Flinders a bit before. It extends eastwards to Portland, "Sealers Cove", and Cape Nelson State Park, "Promontorie de Wilson", and westward to the area of Nullarbor National Park. The map was first included in 'Voyage de decouvertes aux terres australes.', 'Atlas Historique' (1811), with "No 2" in the top right corner, it then appeared in the second 'Atlas Navigation et Geographie' (1812) with "No 10" upper right. However, this example was not included in either atlas, but was sold separately. It has the "No 10", upper right, but also "HydFr. No. 636", and "Prix 1F-50c" lower right. "It appears that, in 1832, prices were increased from F1.50 to F2" (Brown), and so, as the next previous catalogue was issued in 1822 by Jean-Andre Dezauche, it can be assumed that this examples dates from then, at the earliest. One of the earliest maps of Sydney First issue. Engraved map, close trimmed, restored. Plate 30 from 'Voyage de decouvertes aux Terres Australes. : partie Navigation et Geographie. Atlas par Louis Freycinet' (1812), the official account of the Baudin expedition to Australia. First separate edition. 8vo. A crisp copy in the publisher's printed wrappers, largely unopened. 46pp. Paris, Typography Ch. Meyrueis et Cie., Exceedingly rare, this memorial to Charles Baudin (1784-1854) originally appeared in the Protestants Illustres, but this offprint is altogether more desirable and in lovely condition.   Baudin made an auspicious debut to his naval career as midshipman on the Géographe on Nicolas Baudin's (no relation) 1800-1803 voyage to Australia. The object of the voyage was to expand France's presence in New Holland in areas unoccupied by the British. Baudin's voyage co-incided with that of Matthew Flinders' and the two famously met on 8 April, 1802, in Encounter Bay.   He evidently served with some distinction as he was the only midshipman retained on the Géographe following its arrival in Port Jackson and was promoted to enseigne (sub-lieutenant) upon his return. He later served in the West Indies on the Piémontaise and in the Indian Ocean on the Semillante. He lost an arm fighting against the British ship HMS Terpsichore during this time, though continued his naval career. He made his way through the ranks and was appointed commander-in-chief of France's Mediterranean Fleet in 1848. He retired the following year.   No copies on OCLC, or Libraryhub, we locate a single copy at BnF.   Howgego 2, B16; Starbuck, Nicole, Baudin, Napoleon and the Exploration of Australia (Taylor & Francis, 2015), p.54.

Collection of 14 signed letters, all but 3 autographs, written by Charles Baudin (1792-1854) and dated 1842-1849, when he served as Maritime Prefect at Toulon. He was one of the leading naval figures of the 19th century, whose naval service, mostly as Vice Admiral, began under Napoleon Bonaparte and ended in the early days of the Second Empire. Charles Baudin lost his right arm in battle in 1808 and had to write with his left hand, leading to the distinctive back-sloped handwriting evident in his signature and the 10 autograph letters. All letters are in good or very good condition. Letters 4, 7 and 14 are very slightly browned and 14 also shows some small stains. Letter 2 has a corner torn off and a small hole (neither affecting the text). A valuable primary source for French naval affairs in the last decade of Louis Philippe I's reign.l For Charles Baudin: Howgego, 1800-1850, B16 (see also B17). Letters in black and brown ink on paper (11 with the "prefecture maritime" letterhead), 1 with its original envelope and 3 originally folded, addressed and sealed for posting without an envelope.

A letter relating to the publication of Dumont d'Urville's account of his second voyage in the Astrolabe, one of the most important Pacific and Antarctic voyages of the nineteenth century. Manuscript in ink, single sheet, quarto, headed Paris, 4 février 1841, a note from Admiral Charles Baudin, commander of the French fleet in Central and South America, to the publisher Casimir Gide, advising him that he has been recommended to the explorer Dumont d'Urville to be the publisher of his account of the Astrolabe's recently returned second voyage (1837-40); signed Charles Baudin; Baudin enclosed a letter he had received from Dumont d'Urville, which was evidently returned to him by Gide as requested; the verso with address and postal markings; original folds, paper toned and roughened along one edge, but complete and legible. "J'ai l'honneur de vous adresser ci-incluse la lettre que j'aireçu de l'amiral Dumont d'Urville, en réponse à celle par laquelle je l'avais prié de faire choix de vous pouréditeur de son dernier voyage. Je regrette de n'avoir pas eu de solution précise, mais puisque M. d'Urville s'en rapporte au ministre, je crois que toutes les chances sont pour vous. Je vous serais obligé de vouloir bien me renvoyer sa lettre". Casimir Gide was to heed Baudin's recommendation: he published Dumont d'Urville's account of the Astrolabe's expedition to the Antarctic inVoyage au Pôle Sud in24 volumes between 1842 and 1854.
