Illustrates Japanese domestic life, religion, folklore, old Tokyo, Kyoto, politics, education, literature, customs, festivals, theatre, etc. Written by the Envoy Extraordinary Minister Plenipotentiary who represented Switzerland during his two-year stay in Japan from 1863 to 1864. Embellished by sketches done while travelling. A wonderful insight into nineteenth-century Japan before the influence of foreign powers.
