Illustrates Japanese domestic life, religion, folklore, old Tokyo, Kyoto, politics, education, literature, customs, festivals, theatre, etc. Written by the Envoy Extraordinary Minister Plenipotentiary who represented Switzerland during his two-year stay in Japan from 1863 to 1864. Because of his diplomatic position, he was able to travel beyond the barriers of the foreign enclave at Yokohama, a privilege accorded exclusively to diplomats.
