Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Near Fine. First Edition. A first impression of the true first edition of this anthology of short stories by leading writers of the 1930s. The book was published as No. 75 in Jonathan Cape's 'Florin Books' series, published at two shillings (2/-) or a Florin. ***Near fine in textured oatmeal cloth-covered boards with brown titles to the spine and front board. The boards are clean and unmarked. No creases or bumps. Corners sharp. Very slight reading lean to the binding, but no reading creases to the spine. Page block edges clean. Internally also near fine with no inscriptions. The paper used is quite thin, but there is virtually no creasing. Pages clean. No creases or tears. ***In a very good printed dustwrapper, which has not been price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's printed price of 2s. net. The dustwrapper is complete, with just some light edge wear at the top edge. There is some light creasing also to the top edges and a small closed tear at the top edge of the back panel near the foldover flap. No chips and no serious creases or tears. The spine colour remains unfaded - just slightly browned. Dustwrapper bright. ***185mm x 125mm. 256 pages plus an extensive 24 page Florin Books Catalogue at the back of the book. ***Contents: Sally Go Round the Moon by H. E. Bates, Blind by Douglas Boyd, One of the Leaders by Arthur Calder-Marshall, Prince of Obolo by Roger Dataller, The End of the Party by Graham Greene, The Saint who Lost his Halo by Charles Hodges, Zimin by Janko Lavrin, The way Home by Orgill MacKenzie, Panahard and Mr. Snaith by A. Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. First Edition. First impression of the true first edition. With a preface by V.S. Pritchett. ***Near fine in sea-green cloth-covered boards with black titles on the spine. The boards are clean and unmarked, having been protected by the dustwrapper since 1936. Head and tail of spine slightly creased. Extremities just slightly rubbed. No bumps. Corners sharp. Page block edges clean. No reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. Internally also near fine with no inscriptions, but with an attractive bookplate "Anthony John Poucher" on the front free endpaper, and a very small bookseller's label "B. H. Blackwell Ltd., Oxford" on the front pastedown. Some offsetting to the endpapers, but no internal foxing. Pages clean. Paper stock slightly tanned with age. No creases or tears. ***In a very good original printed dustwrapper, which has been neatly corner price clipped. The dustwrapper is complete with no loss, and no creases or tears. There is some browning to the spine and a little browning to the edges. ***293 pages. 214mm x 144 mm. ***Contents: Introduction by Derek Verschoyle, Geoffrey Chaucer by Frederic Prokosch, Sir Thomas Mallory by Louis MacNeice, John Lyly and Sir Philip Sidney by Rose Macaulay, Daniel Defoe by V. S. Pritchett, Samuel Richardson, Henry Fielding and Tobias Smollett by David Garnett, Laurence Sterne by A. Calder-Marshall, Jane Austen by Elizabeth Bowen, Sir Walter Scott by Edwin Muir, Thomas Love Peacock by Henry Romily Fedden, Charles Dickens and W. M. Thackeray by Sean O'Faoliin, Charlotte, Anne and Emily Bronte by E. F. Benson, Anthony Trollope by L. A. Pavey, George Meredith by Bonamy Dobree, Samuel Butler by Catherine Carswell, Henry James by Graham Greene, Thomas Hardy and Joseph Conrad by H. E. Bates, D. H. Lawrence and Aldous Huxley by Peter Quennell, E. M. Forster and Virginia Woolf by E. B. C. Jones, James Joyce by L. A. G. Strong. ***'There are so many books about the English Novel already in existence that an addition to their number may seem to call for an explanation. We are confident that this book is justified by its unusual aim and method, which distinguish it from any previous volume. It differs in aim, because Mr. Verschoyle has not compiled just another catalogue of the achievements of English novelists, major and minor, through the five centuries during which English novels have been written, but has attempted to trace the development of the English novel, from its primitive origins to its contemporary complexity, in terms of the contributions of its twenty-five most important exponents - the book, in fact, provides a bird's-eye view of the novel's progress. It differs in method, because it is not the work of a single writer but of twenty of the most distinguished of contemporary novelists, each of whom provides a chapter in judgment on a great predecessor.' (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper). ***A really nice example of this anthology, with contributions from many of the significant literary writers of the inter-war period, including Graham Greene. Very hard to find now in the original complete dustwrapper. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. No Jacket. First Edition. First impression of the true first edition. With a two-page preface by Graham Greene, and contributions by Anthony Powell, W.H.Auden, H.E.Bates, Stephen Spender, Elizabeth Bowen, Walter Greenwood, L.P.Hartley, William Plomer, Derek Verschoyle, Antonia White, and Greene himself (a ten-page essay, 'The Last Word', about his Berkhamsted schooling). ***A very good copy in black cloth-covered boards with blue titles to the spine. The boards are quite clean with just some light marks commensurate with age and handling. Some fraying to the cloth at the top of the spine. No other tears or creasing. No bumps. Corners slightly rubbed and softened. There is a slight forward reading lean to the binding. No reading creases to the spine. Page block edges clean without any foxing. Internally the book is also very good, with no ownership inscriptions, but with an attractive decorative period - 'Great School Library' - bookplate to the front pastedown. There is slight browning to the front pastedown, but the interior pages are nice and clean, without any foxing. No creases or tears. No dustwrapper. ***205mm x 145mm. 256 pages. ***'I regard this book rather as a premature memorial, like a family photograph album, a gathering of the staid and unloved hovering, in the most absurd headgear, unconsciously "upon the brink" and occasionally among them, in a deerstalker cap or hobble skirt, somebody who has betrayed one's natural distrust of human nature, somebody one has loved and will miss. Like the family album, this book will, I hope, be superficially more funny than tragic, for so odd a system of education does not demand a pompous memorial.' (Quote taken from the Editor's Preface) ***First impression of the true first edition of this pre-war Graham Greene. The first book edited by Greene, of which 1,517 copies were printed (Wobbe A7) and uncommon. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
