Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. Abnutzung / Risse - leicht. Germany is no easy country to sum up in 80 images. Yet, photographer Bastienne Schmidt--who has been living in New York since 1988--has done just that. Presented here is her trip with a camera through the country of her birth. The award-winning artist has discovered a severe, dark, and sometimes bizarre, place; it all looks somewhat strange and at the same time familiar through her lens. The photographs, which have a great suggestive power, turn the completely ordinary into a seemingly strange and different world. With portraits of people and places that exude a certain distance, unusual perspectives (crisp twin beds with peaked pillows) and extraordinary details (a soccer field seen through the net of the goal), Schmidt takes the viewer on a provocative journey through Germany's past and present. ShadowHome is simultaneously a tribute and a hard, critical and loving look at a country--and what it means to return home.

Zustand: Sehr gut. 114 ungezählte Seiten. In her investigation of women, the artist Bastienne Schmidt understands that an examination of an entire gender requires an open approach, and uses the organizing principle of typology to reveal nuance rather than confirm identity. The silhouettes of female forms in her Typology of Women series recall familiar styles, occupations, and cultural identities in anthropological outline, For instance, one figure resembles a can-can dancer holding up her skirt and another calls to mind a fashion model from the nineteen-fifties. But small additional details within the painterly orange and yellow silhouettes, such as other figures and marks, complicate the identity suggested by each shape's perimeter.

Bastienne Schmidt, 1961 in München geboren, Studium in Athen, München und Perugia, lebt seit 1988 in New York. Erhielt zahlreiche internationale Auszeichnungen, u. a. den World Press Photo Award. Signed by the author on the title page. How the American dream guides us as individuals and as a society. Daniel Irvin Rather Jr. (born October 31, 1931) is an American journalist, commentator, and former national evening news anchor. He began his career in Texas, becoming a national name after his reporting saved thousands of lives during Hurricane Carla in September 1961. In his first national broadcast, he helped initiate the successful evacuation of 350,000 people. Rather also famously reported from Dallas in November 1963 at the time that President John F. Kennedy had been assassinated. He was promoted at CBS News, where he served as White House correspondent beginning in 1964. He covered the presidency of Richard Nixon, including Nixon's trip to China, the Watergate scandal, and the president's resignation. In 1981, Rather was promoted to news anchor for the CBS Evening News, a role he occupied for 24 years. Along with Peter Jennings at ABC News and Tom Brokaw at NBC News, he was one of the "Big Three" nightly news anchors in the U.S. from the 1980s through the early 2000s. Rather left the anchor desk in 2005 following the Killian documents controversy, in which he presented unauthenticated documents in a news report on President George W. Bush's Vietnam Warera service in the National Guard. He continued to work with CBS until 2006, when he was abruptly fired. In April 2024, Rather was interviewed by correspondent Lee Cowan on Sunday Morning, his first return to CBS News since his 2006 departure. The American Dream is inherently inclusive, and has the power to strike a chord in all of us. It defines us as a people, even as we add to its meaning with each new chapter in our national experience and our individual actions. [This book] is the result of my quest to discover the American dream as your neighbors are creating it today -- I hope that you receive it well. And I wish all of you the best in bringing your own dreams to fruition. --Dan Rather, from the Introduction. An inspirational look at how our nation's earliest ideals resonate in today's world, The American Dream shows us in very personal terms that America is still a place where hard work, dedication, and vision can transform dreams into reality. Bestselling author and award-winning journalist Dan Rather provides a powerful look at Americans who struggle for and achieve their desires and ambitions. He has gathered the stories of ordinary men and women who are accomplishing the extraordinary, and demonstrates how the American dream guides us as individuals and as a society, binding us together, even amid the fragmenting and self-isolating tendencies of modern American life. Each person in this book exemplifies the American dream, living and expressing this national ideal in his or her own way. For some the American dream is simply to own a home or start a family. Some wish to serve God, country, or community; to teach; to test boundaries; to rise out of poverty. Some yearn to live off the land or run their own business. Some want to learn to read or earn a college degree. There are those who work to achieve fame and fortune, while still others simply wish to exercise fundamental American rights: to openly practice their religion, to speak what is in their minds and hearts, and to protest. Stirring and provocative, The American Dream illustrates that the basic American desire for "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness" is alive and well. It also confirms what our founding fathers always believed: that we are a country of visionaries, in ways big and small. Derived from a Kirkus review: A compendium of anecdotes to swell a patriot's pride. Rather revisits the files from a long-running television feature in which he and his colleagues produced stories that highlighted how the "American Dream" continues to motivate and sustain "folks" today. In Rather's eyes, the American Dream involves the ideals of equality and the freedom to pursue one's ow.
