With a full-page inscription on New Year's Day, 1952, to bibliophile Dr. John Pounder, of Pennsylavania. " The book trade has been nice and kind to me. And my side-line as a greyhound tipster had been O.K. as well". :My best and biggest and most startling find of this trip has been to get in the flea market (some three miles ouitside Paris) forty-five copies of ALICE IN WONDERLAND, all in English, all dated 1885, all the 74th thousand, all red cloth, all done up with a bit of rope. A real mystery find, so utterly unexplainable. Why did forty-five copies of the same edition get together and stay together?".

Original publisher's card covers. Dust jacket. Signed presentation copy: 'This is a scarce little book & its my 14th Cordially Fred Bason - 1963.' Fred Bason (1908 Ð 1973), the famous cockney author and bookseller, emerged from the London slums to become an avid dealer and collector who met and became friends with many of the celebrated authors of the time, including Somerset Maugham (though the friendship turned sour), Arnold Bennett and H.G. Wells. He also wrote extensively for the press, made records and broadcasts for the BBC on radio and on television, and was in great demand as a public speaker. This pamphlet describes Bason's amusing visit to Mrs Belloc Lowndes, author and sister of Hilaire Belloc, in order to get her autograph. Doulton & Co. Limited are referred to in the story.
