This edition 'has always been regarded as Baskerville's magnum opus, and is his most magnificent as well as his most characteristic specimen' (T.B. Reed, A History of the Old English Letter Foundries, p.279). The first edition, first state, with the list of subscribers ending in 'Winwood', of this finely-produced pulpit folio King James Bible from the workshop of the master printer and type-founder John Baskerville (1706-1775). Baskerville became a writing master at Birmingham but in 1740 established a japanning business, whose profits enabled him to experiment in typography. He set up a printing house and in 1757 published his first work, an edition of Virgil, followed in 1758 by an edition of John Milton. Appointed printer to the University of Cambridge, he undertook this edition of the Bible in 1763, which is considered his masterpiece. He published an edition of Horace in 1762; the success of a second edition (1770) encouraged him to issue a series of editions of Latin authors. The bold quality of Baskerville's print derived from his use of a highly glossed paper and a truly black ink that he had invented. His typography was much criticised in England, and after his death his types were purchased by the French dramatist Pierre-Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais. Their subsequent history is uncertain but in 1917 the surviving punches and matrices were recognised, and in 1953 they were presented to the University of Cambridge. Baskerville type has been revived, its clarity and balance making it a good type for continuous reading. First edition, first state, with list of subscribers ending in 'Winwood'; pulpit folio (48.5 x 33.5 cm); xylographic title, ownership stamp to title verso, bookplates to front pastedown and free endpaper recto, inserted f. at front free endpapers containing MS family register, loose transcript of 'A Letter from John Baskerville', occasional minor spotting, later endpapers; contemporary red morocco, covers with floral girl border and corner-pieces, gilt spine in 8 compartments, contrasting black morocco lettering-pieces to 2nd and 7th compartments, skilfully rebacked preserving the original spine which has been laid-down, all edges gilt, slightly rubbed and abraded, a very good example. An attractive example, in an unusual contemporary morocco binding of The Book of Common Prayer, the third and last octavo edition from the press of the acclaimed type-founder John Baskerville (1707-1775). Abijah Mellor was a jeweller and silversmith, who established his business in Derby in 1750, being the first to set up such an industry in the town. His output was apparently deemed superior to any other such establishment in the country, with the exception only of London manufacturers, and at one time he had 300 men in his employ. 'Baskerville was one of the giants of English typography, introducing a number of innovations, including the eponymous typeface still in use today. His typefaces were finely constructed, his designs simple, and spare, and made great use of white space. He also pioneered the development of fine papers for printing' (Society of Archbishop Justus). Third edition; large 8vo (24 x 16.5 cm); ownership inscription in pen to title; contemporary blue-green morocco, panels with wide gilt borders of alternating flowers and urns, morocco label centrepiece to upper panel lettered 'Abijah Mellor' in gilt within scalloped seedhead border, flanked by floral sprays and laurel-dove tools in gilt, gilt spine in 6 compartments with an all-over design of alternating flowers and lozenges, all edges gilt, minor wear toe extremities and spine ends, otherwise near fine. Provenance: Abijah Mellor (ownership inscription and label). Gaskell 19. …

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. The Works of Mr. William Congreve Consisting of his Plays and Poems Birmingham. Printed by John Baskerville for J. and R. Tonson, in the Strand, London. MDCCLXI [1761] 3 volumes. All three volumes bound in a recent quarter-leather binding. Light brown leather spine with raised cords, spine labels in maroon and darker brown with gold lettering. Marbled paper over boards. Marbled endpapers. Page edges gilt. Bookplates on the inside front covers of all three volume with the name "Benjamin T. Pierce." The bindings are very handsome -- however, volume 1 and volume 3 were put in the wrong bindings. It doesn't make a bit of difference as the sit on the shelf, as they are numbered 1, II and III - but it's still an embarrassing binder's error. Considering the recent vintage and high quality of the bindings, we're surprised it was allowed to stand. The first volume contains The Old Batchelor and The Double Dealer. 358 pages. 2 engraved plates. The second volume contains Love for Love and The Way of the World. 514 pages. 2 plates. The third volume contains The Mourning Bride, The Judgement of Paris, Semele, and Poems. 514 pages. 1 plates. A very beautiful example of Baskerville's work. Bindings tight and text block clean and square. Books measure 6 x 9.5 inches.…

8vo, pp. [4], 676; printed in beautiful Greek types throughout; contemporary full calf, rubbed at edges, rebacked ca. early 20th century, and preserving the old red morocco labels, scuffed. Engraved bookplate of Earl Cornwallis. This is the only book printed in the Greek type that Baskerville himself designed and cut, which is also the only Baskerville type that survives to this day. Gaskell add.2, noting that 2000 copies of the octavo edition were ordered printed by the Delegates of the University, and 500 of the quarto.…

First edition. John Baskerville (1706-1775) was perhaps the most important English typographer of the 18th century, whose typeface remains in use today. Preceding the private press movement by over a century, Baskerville took considerable care in every aspect of the design and production of his books, with the aim of creating a beautiful and accessible text. Opting for utility and clarity, he employed a clear and bold typeface without unnecessary flourish and ornamentation, a design choice which acted as a major influence on the course of book history. The present work was one of Baskerville's last productions before his death two years later. This copy includes both the half-title and the final blank, which were often lost in the binding process. Provenance: from the Saxe-Teschen Library, though unmarked as such, with shelf mark on pastedown, and with the bookplate of Henry Tschudy (1882-1961), the owner of the German printing company H. Tschudy & Co. Gaskell 51; ESTC T133320. Quarto (292 x 230 mm). Contemporary continental quarter calf, red morocco label, spine richly gilt, brown paper sides, red and green dotted endpapers. Very light rubbing to covers, minor creasing to some page corners, internally clean. A highly attractive copy.…
