In den WarenkorbHardcover. First edition thus. 263pp. Duodecimo [18 cm] Very good. Spine slightly cocked and faded. The spine ends are a bit discolored and bumped. There are several small indentations along the edges of the covers, and there are a few insignificant stains on the top edge of the text block. Light foxing on the endsheets. Tanned pages. The book is sturdy. The dust jacket is in very good condition. The edges are chipped, and have small closed tears. The longest closed tear is one inch long. Also age-toned and lightly rubbed. More heavily darkened at the spine, edges and folds. There are a few tiny stains on the front panel. Recknagel 441, Hagemann 71, Howard 3h, Farmer 19, Treverton 280. British movie edition of this classic B. Traven novel. Traven, one of the most elusive and mysterious novelists of the twentieth century, remains largely unknown despite the translation of his books into most major world languages. The majority of the English-speaking world knows Traven only through the movie version of "Treasure of the Sierra Madre," starring Humphrey Bogart.…

In den WarenkorbFirst English edition of Hesse's best-known novel, in the exceptionally rare dust-jacket. Originally published in German in 1927, the novel was preceded by a collection of poems titled The Crisis: From Hermann Hesse's Diary. Now a classic of international literature, in its time Der Steppenwolf was castigated by the Nazis as a corrupting force for its depiction of a disaffected outsider and his lapse into decadence and drug use. First English edition, first impression; 8vo; 4pp. ads at rear, some spotting to early & later leaves, publisher's black cloth, titles to spine red, top edge red, spine slightly sunned, bookseller's ticket to rear pastedown, with the price-clipped dust-jacket, small paper repairs to verso at spine ends, spine panel slightly toned, foot of spine panel chipped with loss (not costing lettering), short splits to head of spine panel at folds, light creasing to extremities, otherwise very good in the rare dust-jacket.…

In den WarenkorbZustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. First American Edition. First American edition, first printing of Steppenwolf. [vi], 309 pp. Bound in publisher's black cloth lettered in red on spine, red topstain. Near Fine with light rubbing to extremities and upper textblock edge, bookseller ticket to back pastedown. In the scarce dust jacket, corners clipped but price of $2.50 intact; Very Good with sunning and small hole to spine panel, several faint stains, and moderate wear including several splits and edge tears (up to 1-3/4 inches), of which two are repaired with tape to verso. Mileck IX 60a, Waibler UE 196. Together with two privately printed and scarce poems, Klage und Trost (1954) and Das Lied von Abels Tod (c. 1957), each on single-fold A5 sheet. The poems are enclosed in Hesse's stationery envelope, addressed in his handwriting to Frau Loni Pflug in Munich. Near Fine with light wear, toning, and foxing. Mileck III, 236 & 308a. A beautiful copy of the first American edition of Hesse's best-known novel, in which his surrogate Harry Haller finds his way though suicidal despair. The book was a bestseller in Germany but shocked many American reviewers with scenes of casual sex and drug use; one generally positive reviewer warned that the book was not for "those who are irremediably steeped in the conventionally rigid formulas" dividing human activities into Good and Bad. Henry Holt did not issue a second edition of Steppenwolf until 1947, and it was not until the blossoming of 1960s counterculture that the United States experienced its "Hesse Boom" and millions of copies of his works sold. Copies from the small print run of 1929 are rare. The two privately printed poems are even harder to find. Hesse sent individual poems to his correspondents, including the Loni Pflug to whom this envelope is addressed. Klage und Trost was printed March 1954 as a thank-you for "so many dear letters and well-wishes." Hesse, who won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1946, continued to receive honors, visits, and letters throughout his quiet final years in Switzerland. Poems like these are his final literary legacy. …
