This volume provides the first complete English translation of his three most celebrated tracts: On Guelfs and Ghibel…lines, On the Government of a City, and On the Tyrant, which constituted the first consolidated response by a medieval lawyer to the problem of tyranny in the city republics of central and northern Italy. Crucial sections of Bartolus' academic commentaries on Roman law are also translated in an appendix. George Garnett and Magnus Ryan make the writings of Bartolus accessible to an expanded audience, situating his political theory in its original context and explaining his arguments. Footnotes to the translation explain all Bartolus' references to normative sources, legal and otherwise, and a detailed glossary of legal terms and institutions is provided. This translation allows readers to understand how Bartolus mobilised the Roman and canon laws to address immediate political developments, and why he was the most famous and enduringly influential medieval lawyer.

Early ms. ink collection number on left pastedown and paper label with early library number to head, later larger paper slip glued beneath with title, bookseller's label towards guts at foot (E. & C. Brown, Booksellers, 13, Bishop's Road, Paddington, W. 20, Sheldon St. (Adjoining)). Bound in contemporary South German blind-stamped alum-tawed skin over wooden boards, sides divided into rectangular compartments and decorated with stamps of rosettes, animals, lilies and an arrow through a heart, the whole within a roll border of a larger arrow through heart stamp, spine decorated in compartments, divided by five raised bands covering double sewing supports, with a profusion of the same stamps, metal cornerpieces and original catch and clasps of copper alloy. Later chevron headband linings of blue, red and white cotton threads. (A few minor signs of wear). A monumental volume in very good condition despite a few missing leaves. Not in Adams or BMC. None of the tools identified in Kyriss.

Bartolus genoss schon zu Lebzeiten hohes Ansehen: summus iuris commentator. 1313/14: geboren in Ventura, heute ein Ortsteil von Sassoferrato in den Marken um 1328: Beginn des Rechtsstudiums in Perugia bei Cinus de Pistoia (1270-1336/7) 1333: Wechsel nach Bologna zu Jacobus Buttrigarius (1274-1347) und Rainerius de Arisendis (gest. 1358) 1334: am 10. Bartolus studied at the early age of 14 at the University of Perugia, where in particular Cinus de Pistoia was his most well-known teacher.
