The species within each pair differ only or mostly in their protoconch morphology, which reflects their larval developmental type (multispiral vs. paucispiral, corresponding to p…lanktotrophic vs. non-planktotrophic development, respectively). Of the ten studied pairs, one (P. histrix/R. pseudohystrix) includes species with almost allochronic ranges; one pair includes species with allopatric ranges (R. oblonga NE Atlantic, R. alleryana Central Mediterranean Sea); the remaining 8 studied pairs include exclusively Mediterranean species. Il materiale esaminato proviene dalla collezione privata di Gianpaolo Franzoni che ha insegnato nella città di Alessandria d'Egitto e ha svolto attività di raccolta non sistematica tra il 1986 e il 2008. Inoltre, dopo l'inquadramento storico del Canale di Suez, gli autori esaminano i danni provocati dall'ingresso di specie aliene provenienti dal Canale (c.d. specie "lessepsiane") sulle specie indigene mediterranee e di quali potrebbero essere gli scenari futuri da essi derivanti sulle biocenosi tipiche del mare nostrum. L'opera rappresenta un "unicum" nello scenario della malacologia moderna in quanto le aree indagate sono oggi interdette alla possibilità di ulteriori studi sia per una antropizzazione selvaggia, che ha alterato in modo irrimediabile gli ambienti naturali sia per ragioni politiche, trattandosi di territori militarizzati e fortemente presidiati. Overall, 326 different species are described and commented on by the authors, Franco Agamennone, Pasquale Micali, Luigi Romani, Gianpaolo Franzoni and Stefano Bartolini, 135 of which have been Km from the mouth of the Suez Canal in the Mediterranean) and 191 from the Gulf of Suez. The material examined comes from the private collection of Gianpaolo Franzoni who taught in the city of Alexandria in Egypt and carried out non-systematic collection activities between 1986 and 2008. Furthermore, after the historical framework of the Suez Canal, the authors examine the damage caused by the entry of alien species from the Canal (so-called "Lessepsian" species) on indigenous Mediterranean species and what could be the future scenarios deriving from them on the typical biocoenoses of the mare nostrum. The work represents a "unicum" in the scenario of modern malacology as the investigated areas are now forbidden to the possibility of further studies both for a wild anthropization, which has irremediably altered the natural environments and for political reasons, being militarized territories and heavily manned. 138 pp., 34 figs/plates, br. 4.
