First edition in book form. American Scenery shows the principal American cities of the day, including Baltimore, Albany and Philadelphia, and famous scenic vistas, such as Niagara Falls and the Hudson Palisades. Most of the illustrations depict New York and New England, with others of Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania. Bartlett and Willis were introduced by their mutual friend, Dr William Beattie. Bartlett had established a name for himself as a book artist through his illustrations of Europe and the Middle East. Willis had published a successful travel account of Europe, titled Pencillings by the Way, in 1835, and followed it in 1836 with Inklings of Adventure, an account of the lands surrounding his home in Susquehanna. American Scenery was his first luxury illustrated publication. To achieve it, Bartlett "spent a year in America, during which time he visited Niagara, stayed at Willis's home in the Susquehanna, and together they toured Wyoming" (Hunnisett, p. 114). American Scenery was originally issued in 30 monthly instalments from 1837-39 by the same publisher. Howes B209, Sabin 3784.
