Externally, generally smart with moderate bumping and rubbing, leading to visible loss of leather, especially to the joints, which are cracked but firm, and light marking to boards. Internally, hinges very marginally weak, leading to slight tension to the binding, namely between pages 104 and 105, otherwise text firmly bound. Mainly bright and clean with heavier spotting to the first and last few pages but only the occasional spot throughout. Good. book.

Author ascertained using JISC from a copy held at the University of St. Andrews In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, a little worn. Rubbed to the boards and the spine with a couple of tears in the cloth to the rear joint, and one large tear in the cloth to the front joint. Bumped to the tail of the spine with a couple of closed tears, whereas the cloth flaps to the head of the spine. Front and rear hinge starting. Internally, generally firmly bound. The front endpaper and frontispiece are disbound but present, and the gutter is visible between pages 112 and 113, 128 and 129, and 144 to 145. Heavily foxed to the frontispiece and half title, but pages are generally bright and clean otherwise, with some moderate foxing to the plates and their surrounding pages. Good. book.

Vol 1: 236pp, 14 black and white steel plates including frontispiece and vignette. Vol 2: 234pp, 17 black and white steel plates including frontispiece and vignette. Half-bound in maroon leather over maroon cloth-covered boards. Gilt titles and royal crest on front; 5 spine ribs, gilt titles and decoration on spine; text block edges gilt. 4to. Rubbed spine ends and joints, corners heavily rubbed exposing board at lower front corner. Boards have moderate shelf wear, rubbed and soiled. Endpapers and prelims lightly tanned with foxing in places, bleed from boards to edges of front papers, hinge slightly strained to front. Internally foxing and tanning mainly to page margins throughout; intensity varies greatly, otherwise a neat, bright and tight volume.
