London: Printed for A. and J. Churchill, 1698. [xii], 224, [2] pp. Folio (12" x 7-1/2"). Contemporary speckled calf, blind panels to boards, raised bands to spine. Boards slightly bowed, a few scuffs to front board, moderate rubbing to extremities, corners bumped, hinges starting, crack in text block between front free endpaper, which has shelf markings in a small early hand, and title page. Moderate toning to interior, offsetting and faint dampstaining to endleaves, light soiling and a few creases and minor tears to title page, a minor dampstain to its inner margin along gutter. $250. * First edition. This is the first collection of cases heard in the House of Lords, at this time Britain's final court of appeal. In the introduction, Shower writes in the introduction that he hopes "these Reports may probably convince the young nobles of this Realm that some knowledge of the laws of England.cannot be unworthy of the ambition of every Noble-man's son." The reports were found to be a breach of privilege, which put an end to other reports for almost a century. A second edition, mis-labeled the third, was issued in 1740 and re-issued in 1876. A very scarce first edition pamphlet by Bartholomew Shower and Francis Atterbury, in which they lament moral decline and discuss religious politics. The first edition of this very scarce pamphlet.ESTC citation number R21144.Half-title is present.Register runs as [2], B-I4, K2.Collated, complete.A controversial pamphlet in which the authors lament the decline in moral standards of the British public, and sets out the case for the right of the Church of England to meet alongside parliament. The pamphlet led to the agitation of the High Church for ecclesiastical reform.Written by Bartholomew Shower in collaboration with Francis Atterbury. Atterbury in particular had a religious background, as a High Church Tory and Jacobite. Shower was notable as a lawyer, politician, High Tory, and Recorder of London. Disbound. Half-title, title page, and pages 57 to 68 are detached but present. Edge wear to the first and last few leaves, with a small chip to the head of the final two leaves, not affecting text. Internally, binding is a little strained. Pages are age-toned with some light spots and handling marks. A couple of pencil notes to the margins. Good Only. book.

This work is derived from the manuscript of Hale's History of the Common Law of England, which was first published in 1713. Shower edited the text liberally and added some original material, most notably the folding table, "A Scheme of Pedigrees."
