Leather. Zustand: Very Good Indeed. First edition. The Rolls Series edition of Bartholomew de Cotton's history of England. A bright copy of this work, in English. First edition thus. This is Cotton's second book, which contains the history of England from 449 to 1298. It looks at the Norman conquest (a compilation from Henry of…Huntingdon), a chronicle from 1066-1291 from an anonymous manuscript in Norwich, and 1291 to 1298 is original work from Cotton and is considered to be of great value as an original source for this period in England. The Rolls Series is a major collection of British and Irish historical materials and primary sources. There were 99 works published in 253 volumes between 1858 and 1911. Almost all of the great medieval English chronicles were included in this publication. It was a government funded series because existing editions published by scholars were considered unsatisfactory. This edition of Cotton's work has been edited by Henry Luard, a British medieval historian and antiquary. Luard edited seventeen volumes of medieval chronicles and other texts for the Rolls series. A very bright copy of this work, which is unusual as often only working ex-library copies remain of the Rolls series. In the original quarter calf binding, with cloth covered boards. Externally, generally smart. Rubbing to the spine, with a small loss to the leather. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with occasional light spots to the first and last few pages. Otherwise, just the odd spot. Very Good Indeed. None (illustrator). book.
