Il a été… imprimé «à petit nombre d'exemplaires» (Musée Bartholdi), dont nous n'avons trouvé que six en institutions (Musée de Colmar, BnF, Harvard, UPenn, NYPL, Rutgers University). Reliure de l'éditeur en percaline bleue, dos lisse portant le titre estampé à l'or dans la longueur, plat supérieur encadré de multiples filets noirs, ancres et étoiles estampés en noir aux coins, titre et date estampés à l'or, plat inférieur encadré de filets noirs, étoiles noires aux angles et ancre au centre, tranches rouges. Mors légèrement frottés, plat supérieur moucheté de pâles taches dans la partie inférieure, quelques onglets des planches légèrement fendus en pied sans gravité. Illustrée d'un titre-frontispice gravé, d'un faux-titre illustré de la tête de la Statue de la Liberté, et de 30 lithographies à pleine page rehaussées de couleurs à l'aquarelle. Rarissime exemplaire de l'album de caricatures d'Auguste Bartholdi réalisé sur le paquebot en route vers les États-Unis pour l'exposition universelle de 1876, où il exposa une partie de la statue de la Liberté. Ce curieux album contient la seule caricature de la Statue par Bartholdi jamais publiée: une vignette sur la page de faux-titre représentant le sommet de la tête couronnée de Lady Liberty, aux yeux rieurs émergeant au-dessus de l'Atlantique. Par ailleurs, les profits du recueil furent reversés à la souscription franco-américaine pour l'achèvement de la statue. * En 1876, les États-Unis célèbrent les cent ans de leur indépendance avec une première exposition universelle sur le sol américain. Bartholdi est au cur des événements en tant que commissaire de la délégation française mais surtout en tant que créateur de la fameuse statue de la Liberté. Le temps de la souscription n'aura pas permis d'achever la statue pour cette Centennial Exhibition de Philadelphie où elle devait être inaugurée. Seuls son bras monumental et sa main portant le flambeau, déjà terminés, sont transportés pour l'occasion et exposés à Fairmont Park sur le site de l'Exposition une visite à grand succès, où l'on pouvait monter dans la torche moyennant un billet à 50 cents pour financer le piédestal américain. Tout comme le bras de sa statue, Bartholdi part du port du Havre au début du mois de mai 1876. Il rejoint «L'Amérique» à bord du paquebot du même nom. Pendant les deux semaines de la traversée, il caricature allègrement des victimes innocentes toutes trouvées: ses collègues commissaires de la délégation française à l'Exposition. Bartholdi pratique assidûment la caricature dès ses années d'écolier. La fameuse exposition universelle de Londres en 1851 lui avait aussi inspiré un album entier de croquis et physionomies des Anglais, qui demeure quant à lui inédit. Avec son style mordant à la Daumier, Bartholdi sera unanimement considéré comme excellent caricaturiste, mais seuls ces trente portraits feront l'objet d'une publication: «Sur le paquebot, l'intention procède de la même insouciance. Il croque les divers personnages avec une acuité surprenante, les traits individuels sont marqués et amplifiés à l'extrême, le dessin est sec et nerveux, anguleux et plein de vérité, c'est de l'humour à la Bartholdi. Pour parfaire et achever cette galerie de personnes, il se représente également. Ces feuillets exécutés en présence des antagonistes plaisent énormément et les acteurs complices, proposent l'édition de l'ensemble des feuillets qui prendra le titre d'Album de bord» (Société d'histoire et d'archéologie de Colmar, Annuaire 1979, vol. Belle lettre du jeune sculpteur Auguste Bartholdi totalement dévoué au chantier colossal de la Statue de la Liberté, présent sur tous les…fronts, y compris pour la promotion de son uvre : « Je vous remercie bien de votre aimable petit mot ; il me fait plaisir par son caractère amical ; mais me fait de la peine d'autre part, car j'ai le regret de ne pas pouvoir partir ! Il y a trop de choses qui nécessitent ma présence et je me vois dans l'impossibilité de quitter ! J'aurais été bien heureux de pouvoir faire route avec vous et voir avec vous, les belles choses du passé que vous savez faire revivre devant les yeux. Hélas la nécessité fait loi et il faut que je reste au rivage. J'ai vu dernièrement que vous étiez en rapport avec la société des voyageurs hongrois. Si vous vouliez les envoyer voir la statue de la Liberté, je vous envoie ci-joint une carte d'invitation que vous pourriez leur adresser, au besoin j'irais les recevoir, si je suis prévenu du jour et de l'heure. Cela ne serait peut-être pas mauvais à faire pour le caractère moral de notre uvre () » Le projet de la Statue de la Liberté vit le jour le 21 avril 1865 quand Edouard de Laboulaye, professeur de droit au Collège de France et admirateur de la jeune démocratie américaine, soumit l'idée que la France offrit aux Etats-Unis une statue symbolisant La liberté éclairant le Monde, scellant ainsi l'amitié entre les deux pays. La conception en revint au jeune Auguste Bartholdi distingué par la réalisation de son colossale Lion de Belfort. La défaite de la France à Sedan, suivi de la Commune de Paris et les problèmes politiques et financiers rencontrés, retardèrent le projet de dix ans. La statue devait être inaugurée le jour du centenaire de l'indépendance des Etats-Unis, soit le 4 juillet 1876, mais le chantier venait à peine de commencer dans les établissements de la fonderie Gaget-Gauthier & Cie dans le 17e arrondissement de Paris. Auguste Bartholdi se serait inspiré des traits de sa chère mère pour le visage de la statue, la fabrication de la torche quant à elle revint à Eugène Viollet-le-Duc. Son financement fut un véritable parcours du combattant, l'appel aux dons américains et français étant indispensables. La main fut alors présentée à l'exposition universelle de Philadelphie en 1876 et la tête admirée au Champ de Mars, lors de l'exposition de 1878. Gustave Eiffel, génial concepteur de ponts en fer, fut choisi pour bâtir l'ossature en fer de la Dame. L'édifice de 46 mètres de haut fut achevée en juillet 1884. Bartholdi, de voyage à New York, avait choisi la petite île de Belloe's Island pour loger son chef d'uvre. Elle fut démontée pièce par pièce pour être transporté par bateau jusqu'au Havre le 21 mai 1885. Elle entra triomphalement dans le port de New York le 17 juin. Erigée sur son socle métallique conçu par Gustave Eiffel, elle pouvait enfin éclairer le monde du haut de ses 93 mètres. L'inauguration eut lieu le 28 octobre 1886 en présence du président américain Grover Cleveland et d'Auguste Bartholdi. Signé par l'auteur.
