This phenomenon has created overnight, it seems, active new exhibition outlets for artists, an on-going vehicle for massive social opening events, a Sunday activity for the art audience, a new map in the Gallery Guide and a new focus of excitement and energy in the art community. The galleries are now numerous and offer more than the aesthetic that was first presented by the pioneers (Gracie Mansion, Fun Gallery and 51 X) and which has come to be associated with the East Village. They are very professional enterprises that intend to provide serious support and attention to the artists they show. Many of the galleries are artist owned. The artist/owners who converted storefronts to studios have now converted these studios to galleries. One leaf, 10 x 16, blue lined paper, folded once to provide three pages of text and one postal cover, nicely penned with a couple of ink corrections, one tear at margin (with no loss of text) due to opened wax seal, folds, toning at folds, a couple of light spots else a nice letter. To his friend Joshua Hathaway (one of the surveyors of Milwaukee), Barry writes about the war, marching to the mouth of a river, then to a town called Burita (his troops took that town from the Mexicans), going to Metamora ("the enemy had fled, leaving the place with ammunition more than enough to supply our whole army and about 400 wounded in the hospitals at the mercy of our troops"), mentions "2 pieces of artillery & a company of Texas Rangers," Monterey ("which is now being fortified by the Mexican Army"), etc. He also mentions his property in Milwaukee, about which he is seeking advice from Hathaway. Barry survived this conflict, and was the leader of the Union Guard in Milwaukee by 1860. In 1860, the Wisconsin Governor tried to disband Barry's troop, though they all rallied behind him and booked passage on the steamer Lady Elgin for a trip to the Republican Convention in Chicago. After some marching around, they got back on the Lady Elgin for the return trip. Not long after, in a terrible storm, the Lady Elgin was rammed and sank in Lake Michigan, with a loss of life of about 400, including Garrett Barry. Fascinating piece of history, in many respects.
