In den Warenkorb3pp., 12mo. Bifolium. Fair, on lightly-aged paper. It is not 'from inattention or indifference' that Kelly has left Barry's letter unanswered. 'I think it would be inconsistent with my duty in the office which I now hold to become a member of your very excellent association'. (Possibly a reference to the Association for Promoting the Relief of Destitution in the Metropolis, to which Barry was a subscriber in 1845.) Kelly would however like Barry to convey 'to the gentlemen composing it [.] the deep interest I shall ever feel in the important question to which their deliberations & exertions are directed.'.…

In den WarenkorbFirst and only edition of the first book in English to discuss modern wines and one of the earliest books to investigate ancient wines. This is a handsome, well-margined copy, with a crisp example of the engraved frontispiece by Isaac Taylor. In an early example of the time-honoured connection between medical professionals and expensive wines, this work by the Irish physician Edward Barry (1696-1776) evaluates the best offerings from across ancient and modern Europe, while speculating on their storage and possible medical applications. Much of the book is dedicated to his translations of passages from ancient writers, many of which had been previously unavailable in English. Barry practised as a doctor in Dublin, before moving to London in 1761 and receiving a fellowship from the Royal College of Physicians. He made enough of an impact to attract Samuel Johnson's attention, who wrote that he "brought his reputation with him but had not great success" (quoted in ODNB). Cagle 556; ESTC T86996; Gabler G12120. Quarto (269 x 209 mm), pp. xii, 479, [1]; bound without 4 pp. of publisher's advertisements at rear, as often. Engraved frontispiece, 2 engraved roundels to title page. Contemporary tree calf, rebacked to style with original spine laid down, spine ruled in gilt and with red morocco label. Near-contemporary engraved bookplate of William Downes (1751-1826), Lord Chief Justice of Ireland from 1803 to 1822. Extremities restored, light bumping and rubbing, minor foxing to otherwise fresh contents: a very good copy indeed.…
