Dedication page to Leopold, Prince of Saxe Coburg. 48 soft-ground etched plates by William Daniell after Samuel Daniell, some spotting to plate 1 and a few at e…nd but mostly clean, untrimmed. .Each plate accompanied by a leaf with descriptive text, by William Somerville and Sir John Barrow.Half-title, 48 soft-ground etched plates by William Daniell after Samuel Daniell, text leaves slightly shorter, spotting, half-title toned, [Abbey Travel 326, "a most beautiful and sensitive work"; Gay 3136; Mendelssohn I, p.412],; Library of Congress Control Number 2021666752.; OCLC Number / Unique Identifier: 7390865504.Samuel Daniell (1775--1811) was an English painter and draughtsman who arrived in South Africa in December 1799. He was appointed secretary and artist for the expedition of 1801--2 from the Cape of Good Hope to Bechuanaland led by P.J. Truter and William Somerville. On his return to England, Daniell published, with the assistance of his uncle, the painter Thomas Daniell, and his brother, the painter and engraver William Daniell, African Scenery and Animals (1804--5). .He later moved to Ceylon (present-day Sri Lanka), where he made sketches of scenery and people and eventually died of tropical fever. Following his brother's death, William published Sketches Representing the Native Tribes, Animals, and Scenery of Southern Africa, a collection of 48 engravings based on drawings Samuel had made in Africa. The texts accompanying each illustration are by Somerville and Sir John Barrow, a British geographer and explorer who also participated in early British expeditions in southern Africa. Samuel Daniell sketched animals from life in their natural habitats, and his work was praised for its accuracy and attention to detail. The book also includes sketches of people encountered on the expedition and several vivid landscapes.

Half-leather hardcover. Zustand: Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: No Dust Jacket As Issued. Second Edition. Early calf-backed paper boards, the leather is worn, dried, with chipping and has been professionally stabilized. Wear to the edges with minimal repair. The front joint has been strengthened. 4to; 11 inches tall; 632 pag…es with an index. Illustrated with a Hand-colored aquatint frontispiece, plus 7 engraved plates (4 are hand-colored). The eight plates are from drawings by William Alexander, who also accompanied the embassy and later published his own work. Also, with some line drawings and musical scores; the two uncolored plates are double-paged. "Barrow accompanied Lord Macartney's mission to the court of China in 1792 as his private secretary, and the present account of the country, accompanied by a number of fine plates, is one of the best illustrated English travels on China. The strict exclusion of Europeans by the Chinese Emperors had left China very much terra incognita to the western world well into the nineteenth century. Barrow was an excellent observer, and the text contains a number of descriptions of Chinese artifacts and novelties" (Hill, Collection of Pacific Voyages). Provenance: John Winkle (from his brother Henry Winkle, inscription on the front paste-down); to his daughter E.E. Erskine "upon his decease" (inscription January 22, 1847). Alexander, and two folding engraved maps, the first a hand-colored plan of the harbor and town of Rio de Janeiro, the second a "Chart of the Sout…hern Extremity of Africa" (short tear to second map, maps and folding plate strengthened on fold versos, marginal repairs to 2 leaves of prelims, occasional soiling, a few very light spots.) Contemporary calf-backed boards, vellum corners (rebacked preserving original spine, extremities rubbed, endpapers renewed). Provenance: Note with a presentation inscription from the author laid down on the front paste-down "From the Author"; a few faint contemporary marginal annotations; Quentin Keynes (1921-2003) Collection of Important Travel Books and Manuscripts. First edition of the first illustrated English work on southern Vietnam, and is an account of Barrow's voyage to China with Lord Macartney's unsuccessful embassy to China. "The voyage visited Madeira, the Canary Islands, and Rio de Janeiro; a description of that city and of Brazil in general is given. Touching at Tristan da Cunha, the ship rounded the Cape and eventually reached Cochin China via the city of Batavia on Java. The volume is also of Cook interest as it describes finding Captain Cook's "Resolution" transformed into a smuggling whaler under the French flag" (Hill). The work is dedicated to Sir George Staunton, who was also on the voyage, and who wrote his own account in 1797. The supplementary article "An account of a journey to Leetakoo, the residence of the chief of the Booshuana nation" "covers an overland expedition from Cape Town to the interior of South Africa into the then little-known territory of Bechuanaland, translated from a manuscript journal by Pieter Jan Truter, one of the commissioners of the expedition" (Hill). Barrow continued in Lord Macartney's service after he was appointed governor in 1796 of the colony of the Cape of Good Hope. He married a South African Boer, purchased a house in Cape Town, and intended to settle there permanently, but was forced by the surrender of the colony at the peace of Amiens to return to England in 1804. Technic: Copper print- Aquatinta, colorit: original colored, condition: Tear on the right side perfectly restored, size (in cm): 43,5 x 55,5, View of the Cape Coast at the Gold Coast of Ghana in Africa, with decorative offshore ships. Cape Coast Castle is one of about forty slave castle or large commercial forts, built on the Go…ld Coast of West Africa (now Ghana) by European traders. It was originally built by the Swedes for trade in timber and gold, but later used in the trans-Atlantic slave trade. Other Ghanaian slave castles include Elmina Castle and Fort Christiansborg. They were used to hold slaves before they were loaded onto ships and sold in the Americas, especially the Caribbean. This ?gate of no return? was the last stop before crossing the Atlantic Ocean. The Gold Coast was a British colony on the Gulf of Guinea in west Africa that became the independent nation of Ghana in 1957. The first Europeans to arrive at the coast were the Portuguese in 1471. They encountered a variety of African kingdoms, some of which controlled substantial deposits of gold in the soil. In 1482, the Portuguese built the Castle of Elmina, the first European settlement on the Gold Coast. From here they traded slaves, gold, knives, beads, mirrors, rum and guns. News of the successful trading spread quickly, and eventually British, Dutch, Danish, Prussian and Swedish traders arrived as well. The European traders built several forts along the coastline. The Gold Coast had long been a name for the region used by Europeans because of the large gold resources found in the area. The slave trade was the principal exchange for many years. The British Gold Coast was formed in 1867 after the British government abolished the African Company of Merchants in 1821 and seized privately held lands along the coast.
