The book is an example of the whore dialogue genre, a form of writing which began with Pietro Aretino's Ragionamenti (1534-36), followed by such works as La Retorica delle Puttane (The Whore's Rhetoric, 1642) etc. Such works typically concerned the sexual education of a naive younger woman by an experienced older woman and often included elements of philosophising, satire and anti-clericalism. - - - Originally published in 1683, the present edition is based on the definite edition of 1719.
