In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very good. Second printing (?). 235, (1)pp. Pale green cloth decorated in dark green and red, spine lettered in green. Decorated title page, frontispiece, illustrations and cover design by Hugh Thomson. There are 20 tipped-in color plates, each with a guard sheet with a vignette and descriptive letterpress. plus numerous black & white text drawings. "Once a month, Lord Loam encourages his servants to enter the drawing room for tea. This ritual defiance of tradition disturbs Crichton, the butler, who regards the class system as "the natural outcome of a civilized society." When the entire household is shipwrecked and stranded on a desert island, a new social order emerges -- with comic results for master and servant. This classic English comedy, written by the author of Peter Pan, combines light entertainment with serious undertones concerning the class structure of British society during the early twentieth century. First produced in 1902, the play was adapted for radio and television and has been frequently revived on the stage"--Provided by reprint publisher (Dover)1. Thomson, Hugh (illustrator).…

In den Warenkorbxiv + [1] + 38pp, 12mo. No.16/500. In blue cloth binding, titled in gilt on cover and spine. No dust wrapper. Printed on thick paper. In good condition, lightly aged. Annotated in pencil throughout, and with a page of annotations at the end. The handwriting is distinctive (and certainly not Block's), with the capital N in particular. Some of the annotations give dates from the 1970s, but the handwriting is that of someone from an earlier generation. As an example, one of the longer pencil annotations, on p.5, listing an additional item: 'Caught Napping. / c. 1883. Copy @ auction Sothebys [@ £15. to - Green.] 4/12/73. Presumably a privately printed play. Can't recall ever having seen mentioned before. If correct, Barries's earliest work. (Refer: see "The Story of J. M. B.": Mackail. p.85)'. From the residual archive of the authoir, Andrew Block. See Image for example of annotation.…

In den Warenkorb8vo. Altogether 23 pp. All with original mailing envelopes. All to young (Janet) Eiluned Lewis (1900-79), the Welsh writer, here addressed as "Miss Jane Lewis", covering different subjects. Frequently, Barrie wishes to receive news and to see her: "My love to you all and always hoping for good news. Thank you so much for keeping me informed" (15 April 1921); "It would be nice for me if you could come in to tea on Sunday at five. Could you do this?" (23 June 1921); "Can you and Mary come in to tea on Monday about five? I hope so, as it is a day when Nicholas [likely Nicholas Llewelyn Davies] will be here and he is longing to see you as I am" (3 Oct. 1922); "Rang you up this morning asking you to come in was told you were away for a fortnight. I have been away myself, hence the delay. I look forward to seeing you when you return" (18 Jan. 1926); "Yes indeed it is a long time since you were here, and this is not to be endured. Come in on Monday about six o'clock if you can" (26 Jan. 1928). At other times, he provides updates on his work: "I am busy rehearsing my aged play 'The Little Minister', so no news for the moment" (1 Nov. 1923) or discusses various arrangements: "Your father and mother come here on Saturday about 6 and I'm expecting you to lunch that day, also please bring Mary. I'm going away [.] from Saturday till Monday but they are to be staying here and I hope you also" (4 Nov. 1920); "Michael [likely Michael Llewelyn Davies] is just back, and we don't know what we may be doing at present, as I can't even speak to him. He has such a sudden job of work [.] but I'll let you know as soon there is a chance of his pausing" (5 Dec. 1920). On family matters, he writes: "I am very grieved to hear that your father has this bad turn and trust he will soon be better. These things come so suddenly and make the whole world disjoint [.] Michael has joined the 'defence forces' [.] There is excitement here as to his appearance in a kilt" (11 April 1921), only days later expressing his condolences on her father's death: "You must know that our thoughts here are all with you bereaved ones, and that the boys are as sad as I am" (26 April 1921). More cryptically, he writes to the 18-year-old: "You have now put yourself into my hands. If they visit me from Oxford (but I am afraid they won't) I shall them the truth about you. So there" (16 February 1919). - Also includes a letter from Barrie to Mrs Lewis (Eveline Martha, née Griffiths, 1871-1958), thanking her for some verses and saying how glad he is that "Peter is liking Eton from the start", adding, "Michael was so unhappy that first half" (11 Oct. 1921, no envelope). - Eiluned Lewis's father was the magistrate Hugh Lewis (1860-1921), a landowner who ran a large tannery in Newtown. She began her writing career in journalism; her first novel "Dew on the Grass" (1934) would become a bestseller. Through her mother, the family had a close friendship with Barrie, who visited for holidays at Glan Hafren, the Lewis's home on the banks of the Severn. It has been suggested by Nicholas Llewelyn Davies (one of the five orphaned boys who were Barrie's wards and his inspiration for Peter Pan) that Eiluned Lewis had once been a girlfriend of Nicholas's brother Michael, though she denied this. From Peter Llewelyn Davies, Barrie took the name for his most famous character. - Folding marks, else fine. …
